Refusing to show an ID while operating a vehicle is contrary to everything I've heard and read about our rights, but I'm having a difficult enough time just trying to figure out what the laws are in Illinois, so what do I know.

It's sad that it takes someone so privileged as an engineer from the U of A to get these abuses recognized, because the average American of lesser social status is routinely subject to abuses like this and has no resources to fight it.
