Joe Biden Eliminates U.S. Tariffs on More than 350 China-Made Products

JOHN BINDER 27 Mar 2022

President Joe Biden’s administration has eliminated United States tariffs on more than 350 products made in China, nearly all of which could be made in the U.S. or other countries.

The Section 301 tariffs on billions of dollars worth of China-made products were first imposed by former President Trump after a decades-long free trade consensus in Washington, D.C., that has eliminated 3.7 million American jobs from the U.S. economy from 2001 to 2018.

Late last week, Biden’s U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tai announced that after an extensive review process on nearly 550 China-made products subject to U.S. tariffs, the administration would eliminate tariffs on 352 of those products.

The China-made products that will escape U.S. tariffs thanks to Biden include breast pumps, solar water heaters, garage door openers, X-ray tables, and thermostats, as well as food products from China such as crab meat, Dungeness crab, and Alaskan sole.

“Once again, multinational importers and their army of Washington lobbyists have protected their ability to import cheap Chinese goods over sourcing from American manufacturers,” Zach Mottl, chairman of the Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA), said in a statement:

We are disappointed that the Biden administration granted exclusions to the 301 tariffs on many Chinese products that have alternatives that are made or could be made right here in America, or are made outside of China. [Emphasis added]

As China supports and enables Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, we should be decoupling rather than providing their companies revenue from U.S. consumers. We will continue to fight against those in Congress who want to use taxpayer dollars to refund importers that profit off of cheap Chinese goods, as well as efforts to weaken the 301 tariffs despite China’s continued IP theft, rampant government subsidization, use of forced labor, and violation of the Phase One trade deal. [Emphasis added]

As Breitbart News exclusively reported for months, a group of 140 House Republicans and Democrats had been lobbying Biden to cut U.S. tariffs on China-made products.

GOP signatories included House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as well as Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), Burgess Owens (R-UT), Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), Ken Buck (R-CO), Young Kim (R-CA), and Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH).

As Breitbart News Economics Editor John Carney has chronicled for years, there has been little-to-no evidence that U.S. tariffs on China have raised consumer costs for Americans.

A study from 2019 found that permanent U.S. tariffs of 25 percent on all Chinese imports would create more than a million American jobs in five years.

Some here try to tell us we don't "understand economics", as we look around and see nothing but empty shelves...

If we were to ever go to war with China, they would just completely destroy us.

"Hey China, we are out of microchips to put in our missiles to use against you, can you send us some more thx"

We should become as dependent on Chinese goods as Europe is on Russian energy, surely that will ensure our independence and liberty. :sarcasm:

Wait a second. Didn't Biden JUST warn China of a trade war if China helped Russia? Last time I checked China is still helping Russia.

He really didn't, though. The Federal Reserve is not responsible for today's empty shelves. (Perhaps in some indirect manner it is, in which case it is responsible for literally everything, which I know some people sincerely believe).

Today's empty shelves is because we have grown too reliant on China, and the free market failed to address the fragility of the supply chain (and opted instead for JIT, which works when industry is nearby and reliable, but not when its on the other side of the globe).

And Ron is missing the point. It's not, as he says, about "saving American jobs". It's about saving American industry. It's about being independent, sovereign, self-reliant, and beholden to nobody. It's about having a robust economy, that doesn't break down into pieces, when an unexpected crisis hits.

The United States is large enough to supply our own needs, for virtually everything. We should only be importing raw resources that may be in abundance in other countries and not here.

There is no long-term advantage to exporting our manufacturing capabilities to China. Whatever short-term benefits we gain now by exploiting their cheap labor, we will be in a much worse position not even 10 years from now, when their cheap labor is no longer cheap, and yet they retain the 100% entirety of the world's manufacturing sector.

So you're saying, we used to have full shelves, which were full because we imported more stuff from China. Then Trump raised tariffs. And now we have empty shelves because we're not importing as much from China. And now Biden is going to eliminate tariffs on some products.

So won't that help fill the shelves back up again?

You say "we" like the US is a single monolithic entity. like a machine or something whose economic interactions are supposed to be managed by the President.

How about you make your decisions about what you do with your money, and let the rest of us make ours?

Uh, no. I can't tell if you're trolling or just legitimately haven't been paying attention over the past couple years.

The empty shelves have been the result of covid (and people's overreaction to it), and the ensuing bullwhip effect which caused massive delays and shortages, exacerbated greatly by the long distances products have to travel on the container ships.

A lot of people have been paying attention but just don't accept your spin.

The thread title is hilarious.

Here's something that's an unmitigated good for America. There are zero downsides. And there's zero debate to be had about it.

And the usual suspects are calling it "America last."

Yeah....but is it REALLY a free market when American industry is taxed and regulated to death? Perfect case study. As a result of lead point on toys imported from China, new regulations were put on American toy manufacturers to test for lead paint even though they couldn't even buy lead paint if they wanted to. On the flip side, Mattel, which imports toys from China (the source of the problem) was allowed to do their own internal testing.

Here's the downside. (One of them anyway). Biden is about to cause MASSIVE food shortages by banning the import of Russia fertilizer and oil. Meanwhile China is helping Russia circumvent the sanctions by buying Russian oil. And we're still importing stuff from China. A lot of the plastic junk we buy from China will be made with Russia oil. So...the only people being hurt by America's sanctions are Americans. America LAST!

True. Regulations is definitely a contributing factor

"Hey China, we are out of microchips to put in our missiles to use against you, can you send us some more thx"

They would love to continue to supply chips to the US, even during war. Backdoor sabotage, kill-switches and self-destruct instructions in chips is always a win for China.
