BREAKING NEWS At least 20 people shot at birthday party in Dadeville, Alabama

https://bnonews.com/index.php/2023/04/20-shot-birthday-party-dadeville-alabama/

At least 20 people have been shot, some fatally, while attending a teenager’s birthday party in Dadeville, Alabama, according to witnesses and local media. Only few details are currently available.

The shooting happened at around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Mahogany Masterpiece dance studio in Dadeville, a small city in Tallapoosa County, where a Sweet 16 birthday party was taking place.

There was no word from officials on the exact number of victims but local reporter Elizabeth White said about 20 people had been shot after some type of altercation. At least five people died, according to ABC 33/40.

A graphic photo shared by a witness showed at least six teenagers on the ground. A second witness said the total number of victims was higher, adding that white sheets were covering a number of the bodies at the scene.

The Tallapoosa County Coroner’s Office would only confirm that multiple people died in the shooting. Relatives of the victims were heard crying and screaming in grief as they were told about what happened.

There is no word on the status of the suspect or what may have motivated Saturday’s mass shooting, which happened while a teenager’s birthday was being celebrated at the dance studio.

Dadeville is a small city about 44 miles northeast of Montgomery.

Not much info coming out on this, I'm just going to assume the shooter is/was a straight white conservative anti-trans racist bigot.

I'm guessing either some gang BS or fallout from a drug deal gone bad.

Alabama law enforcement officials announced during a Wednesday morning press conference that two brothers had been arrested and charged with reckless murder in connection with Saturday night’s Dadeville birthday party shooting.

On Sunday morning, Breitbart News reported that four people had been killed in the shooting, and numerous others were wounded.

The establishment media widely reported the incident as a mass shooting then law enforcement officials announced no rifle casings were found at the scene. Rather, all the spent shell casings were from “handguns.” Officials also clarified they were seeking “suspects” versus a lone attacker.

On Wednesday, law enforcement announced the arrests of 16-year-old Travis McCullough and 17-year-old Tyreik McCullough. The brothers were each charged with four counts of reckless murder.

NBC News reported a motive was not revealed for the McCullough brothers’ alleged attack on the partygoers.

However, the party’s DJ, Keenan Cooper, indicated that the shooting began roughly an hour after someone was prohibited from entering the party because they were armed.

None of the people killed seem to have been gang affiliated. Of course that doesn't mean there wasn't some gang member that the party. Dadeville is literally in the middle of nowhere though.

As a room full of Sweet 16 attendees in Dadeville, Alabama, moved to the sounds of a DJ Saturday night, their party was abruptly ended by an eruption of gunfire that injured dozens and left four partygoers dead, at least two of whom were local high school seniors on the brink of graduation.

The shooting has devastated the city of about 3,000 people where “everybody knows everybody,” Ben Hayes, chaplain of Dadeville High School’s football team, told CNN.

Community members watch as crime scene investigators work the scene of a shooting on April 16, 2023 in Dadeville, Alabama. According to reports, at least four people were killed and others injured in a shooting during a birthday party at a dance studio on Saturday night.

Tallapoosa County Coroner Mike Knox on Monday released the names of those who were killed:

Corbin Dahmontrey Holston, a 23-year-old from Dadeville, Alabama
Marsiah Emmanuel Collins, a 19-year-old from Opelika, Alabama
Philstavious Dowdell, an 18-year-old from Camp Hill, Alabama, and a senior at Dadeville High School
Shaunkivia (KeKe) Nicole Smith, a 17-year-old senior at Dadeville High School
“I knew these kids personally. Most people did,” said Hayes, who is also a church pastor and chaplain for the Dadeville Police Department.

At least 28 people were injured in the mass shooting, many of whom were teenagers. One hospital that received 15 injured teens said Sunday it had treated and released six of the patients and transferred the rest to other facilities. Of those, five were in critical condition and four were stable, a hospital spokesperson said.

Authorities have arrested Ty Reik McCullough, 17, and Travis McCullough, 16, in connection with the shooting, according to Sgt. Jeremy Burkett with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Both suspects are facing four counts of reckless murder, Burkett said, and will be prosecuted as adults, according to Mike Segrest, District Attorney for the Fifth Judicial Circuit of Alabama.

Here’s what we know about the victims so far.

Marsiah Collins, 19, was an aspiring musician who looked forward to attending Louisiana State University in the fall, his father Martin Collins told CNN.

He described his son as an optimistic person who cared deeply about his family.

“I have my son’s picture over my bed and to wake up now and see it and know my son is dead is devastating,” Martin Collins said.

Marsiah Collins was accepted to LSU in 2022, but decided to take a year off to pursue a music career and spend more time with his mother before heading to college this upcoming fall, his father said.

Martin Collins, a Marine veteran, said his son spent the first few years of his life traveling with him, but ultimately settled with his mother in Opelika, Alabama. Martin Collins lives in Louisiana and was making plans to help his son move for college.

“He loved to spend time with his sisters, and he loved football,” Martin Collins said of his son. “Football was his life. He was very talented and overall, a smart kid.”

Marsiah Collins graduated from Opelika High School in 2022 and played defensive end on the school’s football team, his father said.

Martin Collins found out about his son’s passing early Sunday morning when his ex-wife’s cousin called to deliver the news.

“At first, I thought maybe he ran away from the gunshots and was hiding somewhere but then she told me that it wasn’t looking good,” Martin Collins said.

Philstavious Dowdell, who was also killed at the same birthday party, and Marsiah Collins were best friends, according to Martin Collins.

“Football in Alabama connects the kids,” he said. “Those kids did everything together. They would even go to each others’ high schools to watch each other play. “

Marsiah Collins is survived by his older brother, two younger sisters, father and mother.

Philstavious Dowdell

Philstavious Dowdell was a gifted athlete who excelled at football, basketball and track at Dadeville High, the school’s track and basketball coach, Michael Taylor said.

“Anything put in his hand, God blessed him to be able to do it,” said Taylor, who has coached Dowdell since he was 9 years old.

The oldest of three siblings, Dowdell was killed while attending his younger sister’s birthday party, according to Taylor. Hayes, the pastor, and Keenan Cooper, a DJ at the party, also confirmed Dowdell was among those killed.

Just about a month ago, the coach said, Dowdell had told him, “If anything ever happened to me, even when I go to college, take care of my two sisters.”

The teenager had secured a scholarship to play football at Alabama’s Jacksonville State University, according to Cooper, who described Dowdell as “kind of like the hometown hero.”

Jacksonville State head coach Rich Rodriguez said in a statement Sunday that Dowdell was “a great young man with a bright future.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Philstavious Dowdell and the other victims of the senseless tragedy last night, ” Rodriguez said Sunday.

Taylor described Dowdell as a humble person who he knew “like a son,” explaining that his own college-aged son was very close to Dowdell and the two often trained together.

“His grandmother gave him a scripture every morning before he went to school to make sure he was always on point,” the coach said.

Keke Smith was a high school senior looking forward to attending The University of Alabama, said Amy Jackson, who identified herself as Smith’s cousin.

“She was always smiling,” Jackson said.

Smith’s mother was the person who told Jackson that her cousin had been killed, she said.

Smith was a student athletics manager for Dadeville High School’s track team and helped out the basketball team, assistant football, track Taylor said. She had recently torn her ACL and had to step back from running track, he added.

Six people – including four teenagers – have been arrested and now face murder charges in connection with the deadly rampage at a weekend Sweet 16 birthday party in Dadeville, Alabama, authorities say.

Willie George Brown Jr., 19, was arrested Thursday and charged with four counts of reckless murder, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said. Earlier Thursday, Johnny Letron Brown, 20, of Tuskegee, was arrested and also charged with four counts of reckless murder, the agency said.

Wilson LaMar Hill Jr., 20, of Auburn, was arrested Wednesday afternoon and faces the same charges, the agency said in a news release. It is unknown if Hill has an attorney.

Ty Reik McCullough, 17, and Travis McCullough, 16, both of Tuskegee, were arrested Tuesday night and also face four counts of reckless murder, said Sgt. Jeremy Burkett with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

A 15-year-old from Tuskegee was arrested Thursday morning and faces the same charges, the agency said without naming that teen.

With the exception of the 15-year-old, the suspects were being held without bond in the Tallapoosa County Jail, the agency said Thursday. It did not mention the location or conditions of the 15-year-old’s detention.

'Don't give up on me': Teen recounts terror of Alabama mass shooting that killed her brother and 3 others at her Sweet 16
The attack Saturday night left four people dead and at least 32 others hurt, including at least 15 teenagers who suffered gunshot wounds. Given the injuries, more charges will be filed, and Ty Reik McCullough and Travis McCullough will be charged as adults, Fifth Circuit District Attorney Mike Segrest said.

“We’ve still got four that are in the hospital, four that are in critical condition,” Segrest said Wednesday. “This is just the tip of the iceberg.”

The carnage was one of at least 165 US mass shootings – with four or more shot, excluding a gunman – in the first four months of this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. But it’s still not clear why the young victims were massacred.

“We can’t get into a motive right now,” Burkett said. “That would be part of an ongoing investigation. We can’t share that.”

Authorities also didn’t say what connection, if any, the suspects had to Alexis Dowdell’s Sweet 16 party. Tuskegee is about 30 miles south of Dadeville, and Auburn is about 25 miles away.

The party was in full swing when gunfire erupted, witnesses said. Alexis’ 18-year-old brother, Philstavious “Phil” Dowdell, was killed, along with Marsiah Emmanuel Collins, 19; Shaunkivia “Keke” Nicole Smith, 17; and Corbin Dahmontrey Holston, 23, the Tallapoosa County coroner said.

A candlelight vigil honoring Phil was scheduled for 6 p.m. CT Thursday at the Mt. Lovely Baptist Church in Camp Hill, Alabama.

‘I just want justice for my baby’

After four days of agony and uncertainty, the family of one slain victim was relieved to learn the first two suspects had been arrested.

“I’m happy that the investigation is going well and someone is going to be responsible for all the victims,” said LaShonda Allen, the aunt of Alexis and Phil Dowdell.

She said her family did not recognize the names of the teenage suspects, who were not invited to the party.

A pair of best friends, a gifted athlete and a college hopeful are among the victims of the Alabama Sweet 16 birthday party shooting
For her sister LaTonya Allen, what should have been a night of jubilation for her daughter’s 16th birthday instead led to a lifetime of anguish after the death of her 18-year-old son.

Phil was shot twice in the neck and died one month before his high school graduation. He had been looking forward to attending Jacksonville State University on a football scholarship.

“I just want justice for my baby and all the other kids that were involved,” Allen told CNN this week. “They took away a piece of my heart, and I know the other mothers and fathers feel the same way.”

In addition to the four victims killed, another 32 people were injured, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said.

Among them, at least 15 teens were shot and taken to Dadeville’s Lake Martin Community Hospital, a spokesperson said earlier this week.

He helped save his sister from gunfire, then died
Alexis had been planning her Sweet 16 for months and started feeling “butterflies in my stomach” the day of the party, she told CNN.

She went to her brother – and sat down on his bed – to tell him she was nervous, Alexis recalled. Phil comforted her and assured her she would have fun.

Hours later at the party, their mother heard a rumor that someone at the venue was armed. Allen made a stern announcement over the speaker, she said: “If anyone in here has a gun, then you need to leave because we’re here to celebrate Alexis’ Sweet 16.”

Allen and other chaperones scoured the crowd for anyone carrying a gun but didn’t see one, the mom recalled. And Alexis, her mother and the DJ didn’t hear a fight or any disturbance, they said.

But right then, as the teens were partying to the music of a DJ, gunfire erupted.

“All I remember is my brother grabbing me and pushing me down to the ground,” Alexis said.

She fell into a puddle of blood.

Alexis got up and ran outside, where she reunited with her mom.

But Phil was nowhere to be found.

When the shooting stopped, mother and daughter went back inside.

Bodies of the injured and dying lay scattered across the dimly lit dance floor, they said.

The lights flicked on, and horror revealed itself to Alexis and her mom: Phil’s body was soaked in blood.

Alexis ran to comfort her big brother as he drifted in and out of consciousness.

“You’re going to make it. You’re strong,” she told Phil. “Don’t give up on me.”

But by the time first responders arrived, Alexis said, Phil was gone.

Now, Allen is left to deal with the torment no mother should have to endure, she said.

“It’s a nightmare that I don’t wish on any parent – to go in and to see my baby laying there in a pile of blood,” she said. “That was the worst thing that I could experience in my life.”

CNN’s Alta Spells, Jamiel Lynch, Raja Razek, Kevin Conlon, Taka Yokoyama, Amy Simonson, Rebekah Riess and Chris Boyette contributed to this report.

What the hell...this one's baffling as well.

The rural location and venue doesn't fit gang or drug related.

And none of the suspects are from Dadeville. From the article:

Authorities also didn’t say what connection, if any, the suspects had to Alexis Dowdell’s Sweet 16 party. Tuskegee is about 30 miles south of Dadeville, and Auburn is about 25 miles away.

For those who don't know the area, this isn't like metro Atlanta where you can drive 30 miles and you're still basically in Atlanta. In between each of these small towns is nothing but forest and farmland. The closest metropolitan areas are Montgomery and Birmingham. Frankly I would have expected the shooters to come from Montgomery (it's the closest) but Tuskegee and Auburn are both small towns too. Both are college towns (Tuskegee University and Auburn University). None of this makes sense.

My guess is all of them are honor students and this was just a tragic accident

This is just another example of why we can't have (do) nice things.

This latest event is exactly why I would never allow a large social event for my teenage children.

There is no way to restrict attendance from those who were uninvited without stoking impulsive class envy and resentment.

Not to mention the other variables: gangs, ex-boyfriends, druggies, weirdos, and let's not exclude kops.

Bump for Anti Federalist. Note that somebody immediately thought this was "gang related" and it turns out these were college bound student atheletes, cheerleaders ect, and this story was ALL OVER the national news even though it was a black on black shooting. People don't like it when innocent children die in mass. If it actually had been a gang shooting many people wouldn't care because of the idea that both sides brought it on themselves.

I'm guessing either some gang BS or fallout from a drug deal gone bad.

None of the people killed seem to have been gang affiliated. Of course that doesn't mean there wasn't some gang member that the party. Dadeville is literally in the middle of nowhere though.

To be fair, I generally assume every shooting aside from domestic assault or blaze of 'glory' type mass shooter event is gang and/or drug related.

Oh no doubht. And this took place at a party and not a school. So on the surface it didn't have "school shooting" vibes. It just turned out in this case the victims were mostly college bound students. Sad really. Still not sure what the motive was.
