since we will (i pray) eventually pull combat troops from Iraq (even if we leave behind some bases), i would like to hear people's opinions on what will happen. Who will emerge as the ultimate ruler? Will the country remain intact, or will it fracture into seperate states? How much blood will be shed? What neighboring countries will intervene?

Just some fun speculation...

shias probably will be the dominent.

the kurds will push for a kurdistand but the turks will block it if at all possible, and go to war with them if not.

The neo-cons wrote certain policies re Iraq in 2001:

1. A big income tax cut for Iraq's wealthiest and complete elimination of taxes on business revenues.
2. The quick sale of Iraq's banks, bridges and water companies to foreign operators.
3.The application for Iraq to join the WTO, kindly ghostwritten by U.S. Government contractors.
4. A "market-friendly customs law - a kind of super-NAFTA- aiming for a complete wipeout of tariffs that had protcted Iraq's industry from cheap foreign imports.
5. New copyright laws protecting foreign (i.e. American) software, music, and drug companies.

Not sure how successful these measures have been.

However, the intent was completely unethical.

Don't care.

Time to worry about our people now.

This country (U.S.) is on a one way ticket to hell, and people want to know about what the situation will be when we leave Iraq?...please.

This war will end when one of Bush's distant relatives catches the last terrorist and shoots him in the head on FOX News.... geez..

i agree that what happens to them doesen't affect us, but i just think the speculation will be fun

I don't care. I'd like to leave them without a government. Let's leave people without a mafia, for once. A new mafia will probably emerge, yes, or maybe more than one, because they don't know how to live without statism, but at least give them the opportunity to govern themselves.

"cruel leaders are only replaced by new rulers who will turn cruel".........che

Well, Che would know all about cruel leaders, as he followed one whose policies sank the Cuban econmy. On top of that, Che went to spread death and despair among the other South American nations.

christ will no one indulge me?

if you don't care what happens, don't post on the thread saying so

but since whatever happens will be a result of our intervention i think it merits discussion

Iran has wanted to take over Iraq for decades.... I figure they will just quietly step in and run the whole shebang.

*Gasp* You don't care about the lives of others?! You heartless bastard....

Maybe you need some anger management. How can I care about the lives of people I don't know? You must cry nonstop, since you mourne every death in every country. Iraqis should be fighting the occupation, why give in to corporatism? Why tolerate a puppet government? I know I wouldn't.

(I was being sarcastic)

the puppet government was actually elected by the majority of Iraqis....

look, i am against the war as much as anyone here, but the days of the "Iraqi Nationalist Resistance" are over. Its all about sectarianism and power at this point
