After 12 years of occupation by U.S. military forces, Afghanistan set a record for growing opium poppies in 2013, according to newly released data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

“Opium poppy cultivation in Afghanistan reached a sobering record high in 2013,” said the UNODC. “According to the 2013 Afghanistan Opium Survey, cultivation amounted to some 209,000 hectares, outstripping the earlier record in 2007 of 193,000 hectares, and representing a 36 per cent increase over 2012.”

In fact, according to the latest worldwide data on opium-poppy cultivation, Afghanistan dedicates more land to the cultivation of opium poppies than all of the rest of the world combined.

Good!

There's a whole bunch of boomers that would rather have opium than pharmaceutical pain meds.

Now you know why the Taliban had to be "removed".

Now you know why Pat Tillman was killed.

He was going to come home and talk about this, tell everybody how the US forces there are doing nothing more than guarding the opium production.

AmeriKa.

The opium is being refined and peddled with DEA affirmation.

I suppose good? (in the sense that the starving farmers and their families can perhaps eat)

Far from free market.

DEA raids are going up yearly.

(I know you know this but for those who do not)

It seems opium was the main real reason to start the war in Afghanistan in the first place bin laden was just a cover.

You drastically underestimate the profit potential of that natural gas pipeline that the Soviets started and that the U.S. is finishing.

But yes. What's good for the CIA is always worth fighting for...

That Pipeline in Afghanistan wont do any good for the American Goverment. Ukraine has the largest supply of gas. Of course you know and we both should either the EU NATO's forces attack Russia or anyone else in the near future, the Russians could use the gas a weapon and i just dont mean Ukraine.

Cutting off the whole gas to Europe would be just like a doomsday event. But your right Gas pipes were also a factor, Drugs a secondary bonus.

Can't give you more rep. YES. Very succinctly put. The Taliban said Opium was evil and started destroying the farms 12 years ago. Our righteous govt went ape shit, and invaded shortly after.

Can't fuck with our opium business. The US is a major drug dealer, not just big pharma either, but opium. War on drugs is the biggest fallacy on the planet. Our gov't controls the opium trade but yet back home we pretend to fight drugs tooth and nail back home. Putting people in cages, anal raping people, drug sniffing dogs. It's all a big farce, when you realize the GOVT is soo DEEP in the opium trade.

The weird thing is the GOVT can't even hide the Opium stuff. The numbers speak loudly. Opium production levels are soaring during our "OCCUPANCY".

Yup, and going back for decades now, from the 50's in Cuba to running drugs out of Southeast Asia to Iran/Contra.

Much, if not most, of the poppies* are being refined for pharmaceuticals. (opioids)

Sent down to India to manufacture pills with.

DEA raids soar, people can't receive the medicine they need while simultaneously poppy* production is rising. There are forces behind the scene, (moreso than even CIA drug runners and manufacturers), that are ensuring this.

A big racket. Insurance, pharmaceuticals, prison and police unions, the MIC.... big players are gaining while Afghan farmers are still barely surviving. Wait for the Monsanto herbicide contract to eradicate this "global epidemic." They'll go the route of tumored Colombians.

I've definitely heard some of it is used by big pharma but not MOST, hmmmmmm....

Plant based key ingredient in a good number of opiate based meds. Is that going to be the future of Pot?

It's one of the major drugs (alkaloids) extracted from opium. There's a crap load of compounds that are extracted and used as the basis for high-dollar opiate drugs.

The two simple extractions that are time tested are morphine and heroin...Problem with those is the profits don't go to the "right" people.

The pain sufferer however can get much cheaper relief if he's willing to risk incarceration.

Yep. I see it every day. The new thing seems to be "pain management centers". Instead of a doctor writing a prescription for hydrocodone, they send them to a "pain management specialist" that has no clue about your actual problem and wants to "manage" your pain (which some people have already dealt with for many years and know what works for them, but now they get to start over and let some clueless, careless fuck tell them what to try next).
