Adrian Peterson indicted after giving his son a 'whooping'

I have a couple of young kids that come over to my place.

Minnesota governor calls on Vikings to suspend Peterson
Posted by Michael David Smith on September 16, 2014, 12:29 PM EDT

The governor of Minnesota is calling on the Vikings to change course and suspend Adrian Peterson for abusing his son.
Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton says Peterson — who admits that he whipped his son and caused cuts and bruises — should not be playing until he has gone through the legal process.
It is an awful situation,” Dayton said in a statement. “Yes, Mr. Peterson is entitled to due process and should be ‘innocent until proven guilty.’ However, he is a public figure; and his actions, as described, are a public embarrassment to the Vikings organization and the State of Minnesota. Whipping a child to the extent of visible wounds, as has been alleged, should not be tolerated in our state. Therefore, I believe the team should suspend Mr. Peterson, until the accusations of child abuse have been resolved by the criminal justice system.”
Dayton said he remains a Vikings fan, even as he feels disappointment toward the team.
“I will not turn my back on the Vikings and their fans, as some have suggested. The Vikings belong to Minnesota – and in Minnesota. This has been the team’s only home; and our citizens, including myself, have been its most dedicated fans,” Dayton said.
Given the way NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell handled the Ray Rice case, it’s almost impossible to trust Goodell to handle the Peterson case appropriately. Which is one reason that many are calling on the Vikings to take it upon themselves to bench Peterson. Something they’re refusing to do amid severe public pressure.

Vikings deactivate Adrian Peterson indefinitely

Re the other Peterson child with the scar on his head, I found the choice of words interesting. A witness said "he did nothing inappropriate with his son." Does that witness mean inappropriate as far as the culture goes?

It happened during a spanking in the car (for swearing), and Paterson said, "But he did it his self" (!!!). Evidently the child wasn't taking the whooping quietly like an obedient slave:

Mother: "What happened to his head?"

Peterson: "Hit his head on the Carseat."

Mother: "How does that happen, he got a whoopin in the car."

Peterson: "Yep."

Mother: "Why?"

Peterson: "I felt so bad. But he did it his self."
[...]
Mother: "What did you hit him with?"

Peter never directly answered, but later replied: "Be still n take ya whooping he would have saved the scare (scar). He aight (all right)"

Where's the backlash against Reggie Bush harshly disciplining his one-year-old daughter?

I am going to go out on a huge limb here and assume that most of those who 'whoop' their children lack impulse control and have violent tendencies.

They likely have never heard of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_gratification

My grandmother is the sweetest person I know but I got plenty of 'whoopin's' from her as a child. If your folks had clubbed you about the ears on a regular basis you might not have grown up to be such a colossal douche.

Calling out some random person you've never met (who is for the peaceful treatment of children no less) a douche is pretty weak.

Maybe Adrian should have just followed an established precedent, and merely banished his disobedient son from the garden.

I'm not justifying it or excusing it. It's just not something that is out of the ordinary as much as this case is being made to be. And, of course, we are starting to see sensationalism being brought to the table when it comes to ...oh...dare I say corporate dictation or policing of morality? Is that the right wording? We had that thing with the clippers and then the guy knocking out his wife and now this. Is this just coincidental timing or what?

It had to get to post 13 for this.

Now Winston says FHRITP and he's out for a day. How many football players are getting sanctioned in one way or another?

I don't know exactly what's going on, but clearly there's something going on.

Did football players just start beating their wives? Did football players just start hitting their kids with sticks? Did football players just start swearing in public?

NO.

What's new is the idea that we should try to use public pressure to try to control behavior.

We have a court system. "We have trust in the court system. If you don't like it, screw off."

You hear about how the NFL was asking the halftime acts to pay to play?

This might be the media retaliation. The media - which includes rockstars - felt that they were getting ripped off and are punishing the NFL for trying to grab money for them. Maybe?

It's hard to see exactly what's happening, but there seems to be a whole bunch of BS going on with football right now. Not just the typical "why aren't these great running QBs who win in the NFL not on NFL teams." That's always a problem that never seems to go away.

Man, if there was a football team with balls they could get a lot of good players real cheap. Too bad they're all RBs and Peterson can't catch.

Winston with a pick that isn't the #1. A DE who is registered GOP. Who knows what types of traditionally normal behavior will get you arrested or kicked out of the NFL?

The Raiders are like 0-2 on the way to 0-16, they've been the bad guys before. Mark Davis, though, is strongly against wife beating, so, there's that.

Some NFL team could just say "screw it, we're outlaws". And get great players and win.

Shouldn't Libertarians be celebrating this new behavior then? Isn't that exactly what they promote? Using the free market instead of government force to punish bad behavior?

Maybe America is just sick of domestic violence.
