Absolute Zero: "All remaining airports close" ... "All shipping declines to zero"

Absolute Zero and the Western Holodomor
The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Episode 116 (15 May 2023)

You have probably heard of "Net Zero," the unrealistically ambitious target of having no net greenhouse gas emissions by some point in the relatively near future (2030, maybe 2050 at the latest). A report filed in 2019 by the prestigious government-funded UK organization of engineers and scientists, UK FIRES (https://ukfires.org/), thinks Net Zero is not enough and is pushing for an insanely aggressive program called "Absolute Zero" (https://ukfires.org/absolute-zero/), absolutely zero emissions by 2050. What does it entail? Among other things, no flights, no container shipping, no red meat consumption, no cement, no new steel production, and no fossil fuel use for any reason, even plastics, by 2050. How do they expect this to be possible? Draconian governmental action combined with drastic semi-voluntary reductions in individual quality of life for all citizens. In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay reads the Executive Summary of the UK FIRES "Absolute Zero" report [(pdf file: https://newdiscourses.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/REP_Absolute_Zero_V3_20200505.pdf), hosted by Cambridge University, by the way] to expose the unworkable, catastrophic insanity of their zero-emissions program in the UK and beyond, warning that it sets the stage for a Western Holodomor.

"I love it when people say that Ayn Rand's villains were too over-the-top and unrealistic." -- Michael Malice

(I guess there won't be much for Ragnar Danneskjöld to do - they'll just do it themselves: "All shipping declines to zero")

"Fossil fuels complete[ly] phased out":

UN calls for mass fossil fuel shutdowns to prevent 'climate time bomb'
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/un-calls-mass-fossil-fuel-shutdowns-prevent-climate-time-bomb
Published March 20, 2023 2:13pm EDT

The United Nations (U.N.) published its latest climate change report Monday, which doubled down on global warming-related risks and which the intergovernmental organization dubbed a "survival guide for humanity."

The synthesis report, assembled by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), represents the U.N.'s latest attempt to sound the alarm on the risks posed by climate change and not taking aggressive actions to halt global warming. According to the document, "unsustainable energy and land use" has caused the world to warm 1.1 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, close to the 1.5-degree emergency threshold.

"The rate of temperature rise in the last half-century is the highest in 2,000 years," U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said in a video message Monday. "Concentrations of carbon dioxide are at their highest in at least 2 million years. The climate time bomb is ticking. But today’s IPCC report is a how-to guide to defuse the climate time bomb. It is a survival guide for humanity."

"As it shows, the 1.5-degree limit is achievable. But it will take a quantum leap in climate action," he continued. "This report is a clarion call to massively fast-track climate efforts by every country and every sector and on every time frame. In short, our world needs climate action on all fronts, everything, everywhere, all at once."

There is no such thing as "zero emissions" anything.

Just "not in my backyard" emissions.

California to Require ‘Zero Emissions’ Passenger Trains After 2030, Freight After 2035

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/...ons-passenger-trains-after-2030-freight-2035/

JOEL B. POLLAK 28 Apr 2023

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has enacted new regulations that will require “zero emissions” trains to be introduced after 2030, focusing on a sector often seen as a “green” alternative to cars and trucks.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports:

Under the new regulations, zero-emissions models will be required for all switch, industrial and passenger locomotives built after 2030 and for all freight line locomotives built after 2035. Any non-zero emissions locomotive that is 23 years old or more will not be allowed to operate in the state past 2030.

The regulations also require train operators to open a spending account by July 2024 that they must deposit into every year to purchase or lease cleaner diesel trains and buy zero-emissions infrastructure. Operators that generate more pollutants are required to deposit more into the spending account, and the amount required to be deposited would also increase every year.

It is unclear how the new regulations on trains would affect interstate commerce, which is regulated by Congress under the U.S. Constitution, since many trains in California also travel through other states.

Last August, CARB finalized regulations that ban the sale of gas-powered cars in the state after 2035. California also plans to ban diesel and gas-powered trucks by 2040, and will require all-electric trucking fleets by 2042.

It is unclear how the state’s electrical grid will support all of the “zero emissions” vehicles demanded, since it is already struggling to provide enough electricity to charge a limited number of electric vehicles at peak demand.

The aim is to fight climate change — not through directly affecting global climate, on which California has little impact, but to foster the development of clean technology and encourage others to follow California’s example.

I'm hearing this type of talk more and more. As people are becoming more and more aware of the inherent flaws of electric transportation, this was inevitable.

Electric transportation can have marginally lower GHG emissions over the life of the vehicle, but you end up front-loading the carbon. So a rapid transition would mean a dramatic INCREASE in GHG emissions in the short term for the hope of a lowering over time. People are also becoming more aware of the inefficiencies of that mode of transport.

In other words, the old propaganda is starting to fail so they have to adjust... again. As Dave Rubin often says, "The truth is a time-released pill".

But what to do if you're afraid of the sky falling?? If EV's won't work, then maybe the answer is trains!! Socialists LOVE trains! Or bikes. Or walking. Anything but convenience. Because what you feel is convenient, they see as destructive.
