Dug this oldie up from our very own forums, for those of us (like myself) who didn't already know this. A little hope maybe?

"Confident that Seward would not have enough votes to lock up the nomination on the first ballot, Lincoln intended to get the second highest vote count on the first ballot and line up additional votes for the second ballot in order to show increasing strength. He hoped that this strategy--combined with the presence of an enthusiastic band of followers on the floor--would be sufficient to win the nomination on the third or subsequent ballot."

I hear this Lincoln fellow went on to be an okay President?

If by ok, you mean one of the worst presidents of all time, then yeah, Lincoln was ok.

Without falling for some simple minded bait to derail the topic(yes Lincoln was destructive, and has a legacy that hides behind the misconception that it was his plan all along o free the slaves), I'll try to go along with your point.

Yes, it is a good example of how a brokered convention, and an underdog win is possible with tireless, and irate supporters.

Lincoln was not the worst President. He was fair and honest and compassionate. Don't you read your history? He was killed because he set the black people free. He was a hero!

lincoln was a fascist... but i like this post.

FDR also won the 1932 nomination in a brokered convention. he did so by giving Garner the VP.
Wilkie did it with supporters at the convention; Ike by changing the delegate rules.

Is this sarcasm?

lol my bad guys, I didn't do my proper research. I didn't know Lincoln was that bad of a President. Although as someone stated in this thread, the intention was to say that an underdog can walk into a open/brokered convention and walk out as the nominee.

I'm so tempted to answer this seriously but I don't know if you're being sarcastic. :o

Whether or not Lincoln was a bad president or not, he was clever enough to be elected.

seriously though, I read the Rothschilds hired John Booth to kill Lincoln, because he wanted to end the fed. Anyone else read about this. I read this is the same reason JFK got kileld, that and he didn't want the troops to go into Vietnam.

Pfft... Don't worry 'bout nothin'. Some are just freaking out because they don't know how to put it simply to you: there is another side.
Lincoln, some may say, was a States' rights grabbing tyrant. And if you are a strict constitutionalist, this is the case.
