The last poll data had us within 10 pts. We can take this thing. Can you all imagine the messages that we would send; a rouge GOP grassroots army unseats an entrenched Establishment democrat, in a heavily liberal district. Imagine that.
The best indication of how close we are is the behavior of David Price. The man is knocking on doors
And let me tell you another story...
As a Dr, one of BJ's concerns is addiction and the war on drugs. While reaching out into the different communities he developed a reputation with these guys, and it is working out very well. Turns out that group hosted a candidate forum, where Lawson and Price kinda mixed it up, and BJ kicked butt. IOW - The boyz like BJ and 16 of em are out working their neighborhoods, sittin at the polls, the whole gig.
So today, Price shows up a poll; our guy there is pitching an older lady. Price comes up behind as they finish and introduces himself to the lady; she says, "I know you. I voted for you last time. But I gotta tell you, I ain't voting for you this time!" and walked off; leaving our opponent alone with his thoughts
We can win this.
I spent the first part of the day out in front of an early voting location. (It's an easier sell than RP. The general election is much different than the primary...) We have a few things going for us, and a few against us.
On the pro side, and by no means an exhaustive list:
we have a great candidate who is working hard; and has been since this all began. If you haven't seen the "Meet BJ Lawson" video, click the link.
Secondly, congressional approval ratings are at an all time low and people are ready for "change"; David Price has been part of the problem for a long time and people know it.
Finality, and most importantly, we have the message. We have the truth. Freedom IS popular.
We CAN take this thing.
On the minus side:
we have a very progressive district; many people are not used to thinking much about republicans (since Karl and the Bush Boys destroyed the party.) Not to say that BJ is not sellable, it just takes some finesse. I had my best luck today with a simple, "Have you heard of..." pitch. (that was yesterday I refined my pitch a bit, today, and am nailing it).
Another minus is the simple fact that we are a challenger facing a long term incumbant. That is why the polling place work and canvassing is so important. While many people have seen the commercials, face to face pitching is still the most effective.
One of our biggest obstacles is that NC has an option on the ballot to vote the party slate. This is where the polling place work is critical. We need to get the new (Obama) voters to vote for Lawson apart from the slate. We have devloped stratagies for this and they work. Again, face to face work, and watching the voters get approached by the GOP and DNC "voters guide" people helps us target our pitch.
So, we have a hill to climb but it is not all that steep. We are fighters and we are in this to win this. I spent 10 houirs at a poll today, then went with BJ to a "house party". In the car between BJ is making phone calls. Campaigning non-stop.
There is one other thing in our favor; we have a secret weapon, ourselves.
We have shown the world what we can do for Ron Paul. Now I am asking you all to put that kind of entusiasm into helping BJ Lawson. We need volunteers. We need you all to recruit a few friends, sign up, and use the new online tool to make phone calls. Right now we are hitting the donors list for a last minute push for volunteers and funds. The Pocket Constitutions are gold and my polling place went through 200 in a few hours. The next stage will be GOTV. Calling to promote BJ and get out the voters.
Finally, we are going to need hundreds of ground volunteers to do a righteous job on election day. We have 194 polling places open for 12 hours on 11/4. If anyone in the surrounding areas can come down to help. You will be working for Freedom, Peace, and Prosperity. It really is critical get be at the polls to counter the minuses listed above. The best way to get involved is to sign up on the online tool. Please post this message to meet-ups/family/friends/etc. Please help us help BJ.
