A push for 3rd party in 2016

With no horse in the race and candidates on both sides being unappealing to their base, is 2016 a good year to encourage people to leave the two party system, regardless of where they go?

to be fair, a strong libertarian turnout does actually help Clinton. Thus is the fallacy of our First Past the Post, 2 Party System.

When you vote 3rd party, you hurt the main party most representative of your views, and hurt they who are least Representative.

The real battle we need to have is getting Alternate Voting implimented, as in, we all vote for our top 3 or 5 or whatever, which destroys the spoiler effect against 3rd parties, allowing us to actually be competitive.

This actually maybe a great year for a third party. With Trump and Hillary as the leading candidate I would full on support a non insane third party. Every poll is showing a huge block of Republicans that will NOT vote for Trump me being in that group.

I do favor Trump over Clinton but he hasn't done anything do gain my support, and there are long term gains by getting people out of the two party mindset where they are voting to win vs voting on principles. If we were to manage to effect enough people to change the outcome of the election (doubtful) it would be a good sign for future elections, even if I would not like the short term election results.

Me personally, I would rather have the Libertarian Party take 15% of the vote and let Clinton win...because then we would be THE story in 2020 (I hope)

If the LP can get 5% or more of the Presidential vote around the country in 2016, it would qualify for regular or permanent ballot status in about half of the states for several years (i.e., those states that give such status based on getting a minimum vote level in the Presidential race). This would vastly lessen the burden of the party in running and funding independent petition drives they would otherwise have to conduct across the US.

With that burden cut in half nationally, the party could then concentrate on earning regular status in the other states. Overall, a uniform 5%+ national performance by the LP would lead to improving the party's ability to maintain regular ballot status (once obtained) across the country. This was one of the practical reasons why the party would have welcomed Ron Paul running on the LP line in 2008 and 2012, after his GOP bid was stalled.
