A how-to guide to seeking political asylum outside/away from the USA?

Inspired from todays events regarding Edward Snowden...

Anyway, I'm hoping that we can compile something close to a guide so that it could help people who are considering becoming whistleblowers. I know the forum has had its fair share of discussion regarding relocating in the event of an economic collapse, but I thought it would be interesting if we could compile advice when it comes to political asylum to escape the clutches of the U.S. government. And I think this would be a fun exercise to do and to speculate on what one should do.

Here are a few things that would concern me if I were to pursue political asylum. Perhaps others can add onto this list:
  1. How would you save/record the evidence of U.S. government wrongdoing? Paper copies? Record video of yourself? Save data onto an encrypted USB drive?
  2. Would or should you tell your friends and family about the wrongdoing?
  3. How should you publicize/inform others of the wrongdoing? Upload a video to YouTube? Go to a journalist? Send data to Anonymous?
  4. If you talk with a reporter/journalist, who should you talk to? Glenn Greenwald, Ben Swann, Alex Jones/Infowars?
  5. If you talk with a politician, who should you talk to? Ron Paul (even though he's retired), Rand Paul, Justin Amash?
  6. Where should you seek political asylum? Iceland, Hong Kong? Switzerland? Costa Rica? Or in countries with no extradition treaties like Russia, Macau? What countries must you absolutely avoid?
  7. What is the exact process you need to follow once you arrive in the country? How should you declare political asylum? Should you go to the country first? Go to a consulate or embassy?
  8. Would you just take a commercial airplane flight to the country or is there a different thing you should do (ship, private charter flight)?
  9. What possessions should you bring along? Passport, citizenship papers, birth certificate, medical records, financial records, computers...
  10. How should one protect their financial interests as much as possible? Take as much physical gold as possible? How would one do this? Turn assets into Bitcoins as much as possible?
  11. How (and what) should you tell your family and friends? How does one minimize the trouble they get into?
  12. What attorney (names and types) should you retain? Should you talk to an attorney first?
  13. Should you (or family and friends) start a legal defense/"survival" fund? How does one do this?
  14. Is it better to hide or go public?
  15. If you are married and/or have children, should you take your spouse and/or children with you when seeking political asylum? What about your extended family?

That's a lot of interesting questions which I have NO idea how to answer. One thing is the FINANCIAL aspect. A lot of countries have laws about how much MONEY you can bring with you.

I don't think you are allowed to bring hundreds of gold coins are more than like 10K usd or something like that. OR, you can bring it to certain countries as long as you "DECLARE" it. I flew to a country and as a convenience got a BUNCH of USD converted to the local currency because once in the country the rate is shit. But sitting on the flight reading the customs form I realized I was WAAAY over the limit how much of their currency I was allowed to bring in. And we are talking a couple thousand USD, I just wanted to pay for HOTEL, TAXI, FOOD in local currency I didn't want to use Credit cards, that's all.

So the financial part intrigues me. You'd have to go to a country that doesn't mind if you have a suitcase full of cash and a bunch of gold/silver coins. After traveling a bit, I've noticed there are lots of places that have limits.

I'm not sure what HK's limits are to bringing in currency, but I know WITHIN HK, a lot of people deal in cash, some restaurants and places of business only take cash. And I've seen people at banks depositing Blocks of cash and taking out blocks of cash, and no one batting an eyelash, it's no fucking big deal to walk into a bank and say, "Hey I need $20K USD in $100 notes please.." And they have money changers everywhere that swap currencies easily, all legit, nothing shady. Unlike the US, if you walk into any place of business or bank and hand over 10K USD it is AUTOMATICALLY REPORTED to the authorities. Even a down payment if you are buying a car (you sell your old used car to a guy for 10K) and walk into a auto dealer and hand over 10K and finance the last 5K the auto dealer is REQUIRED to report that 10K in CASH was just given to them.

So it has to be a country that allows the use of cash without raising red flags and allows to bring in cash with no problem (or gold/silver coins).

And you know your credit cards and debit cards might be frozen so you probably won't be able to rely on checking/savings accounts back home. Bitcoin? But how do you cash out in a foreign country and will it be transparent?

I think everyone of those questions could be debated or discussed, I just found the financial aspect interesting.

Number 6 is very very important. I would absolutely make sure I'm in my destination before I blow the whistle.

The best thing would be to get a citizenship from another country,USA allows dual citizenship. Then if you want to run away, just move to the country and revoke your USA citizenship and that would be it.European countries do not extradite citizens. Now you should watch out for the Scandinavians and the English because they just might do it.Germany,Czech republic,Hungary,Poland,Estonia,Lithuania,Latvia,Cyprus would be my best bet.In most of them you don't have to go trough a procedure.,if you buy a house, land, invest money for 150 000 + dollars you automatically get a citizenship if you have no criminal record.

From another thread but it's completely relevant here:

What countries have no extradition treaties with the US?
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_countries_have_no_extradition_treaties_with_the_US

Answer:
We will not list which Countries do not, but as of 2010, 110 Countries out of 192 or 194 have extradition with United States. So leaves bout 84 out there that so-called dont. Never seen list of counties that dont, although have seen many shows with guy`s fleeing to countrys that supposedly dont have, but still ended up being arrested. So not sure who really is out there.
Countries with diplomatic relations but no extradition treaty

The United States maintains diplomatic relations, but does not have extradition treaties with the following countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Andorra, Angola, Armenia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brunei, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, the Central African Republic, Chad, China (People's Republic of China), the Union of the Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cote d' Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Indonesia, Jordan, Kosovo, Kuwait, Laos, Lebanon, Libya, Madagascar, the Maldives, Mali, the Marshall Islands, Mauritania, the Federated States of Micronesia, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia, Nepal, Niger, Oman, Qatar, the Russian Federation, Rwanda, Samoa, São Tomé & Príncipe, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Serbia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, Vanuatu, Vietnam, Yemen, and Zimbabwe.

Countries without treaties or diplomatic relations
If the government says you are anti-semitic or Nazi or enemy of the state as they claim they will come get you. But if you are Jewish and do something you are probably ok. I find it makes sense to move to another country, because in your own country you know good and bad elements. In a new country you will be aware and not do anything stupid. If you have nothing to lose I would suggest living other places with better taxes and cheaper food. The USA is finished as a decent country. It's so big and hard to get around the cities. Move to Europe and see beautiful cities.
The countries which have neither diplomatic relations nor extradition treaties with the U.S. are: Bhutan, Iran, Taiwan, and Korea (North).

How to Avoid Being Extradited to the US
http://www.wikihow.com/Avoid-Being-Extradited-to-the-US

Extradition to the U.S. can be a real doozy. The "land of the free" is really a misnomer: just ask any of the millions of Americans incarcerated in our overcrowded facilities. Assuming that you have already crossed over to the dark side (that is, committed a felony) and are living abroad, here are some tips on prolonging your worldly adventures.

1 Cut ties to your former self. Change your name, start a new career, and don't call home. Ditch your bank and credit cards and don't even think about wire transfers. Electronic media and your presence on the internet must go. Make modifications to your appearance: especially things that would be featured on Interpol and wanted posters. You have to start over - from scratch - and relinquish who you used to be if you are going to beat Big Brother.

Plan your destination. The United States has no established extradition treaty or diplomatic relations with Bhutan, Cuba, Iran, and North Korea. This means that the U.S. has there hands tied (legally) if they want to bring you back. These would probably be your safest bets in terms of not being extradited back to the United States.
3
Plan a backup destination. Smuggling yourself into the previously mentioned countries is notoriously difficult. There are around 75 other countries with which the U.S. has no extradition treaties, however, thanks to their diplomatic ties with them, the U.S. could possibly nab you. This will take some additional research on your part to match up your indiscretions with the laws of potential countries and their extradition history with the U.S.
4
Pick the best fit. You're going to have to compromise, so pick a setting where you can best blend in. That means matching up your profile, skills, and knowledge with the cultures of other regions. Hit up Bahrain if you've got a great tan. If you have a knack for Mandarin: try China. And if you're into universal health care, give Russia a go.
5
Don't get sloppy. If you plan to remain free, it requires sacrifices. Don't confide in partners or stick around if the neighborhood gets shifty. You must maintain a level of alertness after the initial surge of adrenaline that you got you here subsides.
6
Plan for the next move. Pack a bag in the event that you have to leave right away and have a new destination planned out in advance. Research local modes of transportation and elect to travel via means with the least amount of security (e.g. cameras, bag checks, etc.).

Warnings

You do not have to be a U.S. citizen in order to be extradited to the United States. Certain provisions allow for the extradition of non-U.S. citizens.
