At first, I was going "fancy" and looking at these Euro-style soapstone stoves, very efficient and good in limited space, but they run at least 3k (without installation.)

Now we're looking at more traditional cast iron with a blower, I'm not familiar with the type you're talking about but will look it up. We need something with the ability to heat about 1000-1200 ft2, as efficient as possible, and preferably with space on top to use for cooking. Around 300lbs would be good, able to fit into a 40" x 30" corner. What we've found so far runs about $600-$1,000.

Efficiency is probably the least important of the qualities we're looking for, but it'd really be nice. What you're describing sounds great. Off to look it up!

I have a cast Iron heating/wood cooking stove , (spare ) in the garage, I picked it up used for $50 in 2011, guy had just put a new one in , front room of his house, he had a Paul 08 sign in his front yard, I went, looked at the stove , pd him , came back picked it up , brought him a 2012 sign ,thing is awsome , ( but extremely heavy), made a friend without even trying much, got a great stove, front screen if the fire doors are open, has the built in swinging pot handle, nice, my fire place at my old house had the swinging pot handle.

The catalytic stoves tend to burn more steadily, but with less overall heat. My Intrepid has a cat "damper" that can be opened or closed.

I use the catalytic function over night to slow the fuel burn down and by pass it during the day to increase heat output.

The Jøtul uses a "re-burner" type system that works all the time.



By stuff, do mean the catalytic elements? You can remove them and the stove will still function properly.

I have been doing an ongoing Craigslist search, but all the ones I've seen so far are giant beater models that wouldn't fit in the space we have.

You will have to check the specs for each stove that you evaluate. There are clearance specs (or should be) on each stove. I choose the Buck Model 26 because of it's excellent clearance specs (12" on sides and rear) and the build of it (1/4" plate and stepped), but there are others and newer models of various brands.

Also the eco-bricks heat very well too!

have the fireplace version of those. I didn't think it was all that more efficient. It certainly took more time to get it going and keep it going.

Just going to list real events listed.

Power goes out, heat will not come on (gas or oil). No heat, pipes freeze...yes.
No power, no private wells.
Gasoline...you will not get any in an emergency, make friends or stockpile.
Water...seems to go pretty fast.

Need to define emergency by the way.
Best bet, get out of dodge...

Cooking on a wood stove is very different than cooking on a regular stove.... You are going to have a learning curve.
