They use a 90 gr VLD match bullet, at nearly 2800 fps, 1 in 6.5" rifling twist, and still have 1200+ fps left at 1000 yds. That's the same 250 or so ft lbs as a .38 has at 10 ft. So much for all 223's being limited to 500 yds, eh? :-) In fact, the 223 AR has OWNED the 600 yd line at the High Power matches, since about 1997, when Berger first brought out his 80 gr VLD in .224". A 24" 223 will still have 1800 fps and 500+ ft lbs left at 500 yds, still expanding a softpoint and hitting out there like a 4" 357 hits at 10 ft. For realistic sniping, the 223 AR will serve just fine. Do you know what an HONEST sniper said? Carlos Hathcock said:" I made some good shots, but I missed a lot". :-) This was in an interview with him, by American Survival Guide magazine, and he was a proven 1000 yd match champion. You are nothing of the kind, so much for your 308 and 1000 yd dreams, eh?

Specialty built match rifles are different from what one normally uses during times of danger.

You can tinker with the AR platform with heavy barrels, and all sorts of gadgets that the M1A (M14) can't match in terms of versatility. Thus, the AR can deliver the accuracy that meets or exceeds any other military rifle.

The weapon can never be better than the person operating it.

Yeah anytime you watch a pro recreate a shot like on topshot for instance, it takes them a few shots to dial it in. When they reinact the "war story" however it always seems very one shot one kill.

Now my question to you is this.

223. versus 5.56 versus 5.45x39

those are the rounds that make me think as I see all of them being better killers than larger 308's 7.62x39s and so on.

I am currently in love with my ak74 which is a 5.45x39 and that is why I am wondering as I debated between the 223 and 5.45x39 mainly.

I wanted a round that had more tumble and so far it seems the 5.45 has more "kill" in it than the 223 but I don't know many ak74's that can keep up accuracy wise with a ar but I am new to this rifle but hey maybe someone might know.

The only time I attempted a 700+ shot was with my 7 mag and it made me realize that I am not a "top shot" so I will focus on 250 and closer lol and ALOT OF ROUNDS FLYING lol. Heres to hoping I guess if the shtf ever.

Oh also the 5.45x39 is SUPER cheap round wise thanks to good ol mother russia

Current military thinking is to have as many rounds as possible in the combat load, and small caliber with hyper velocity provides sufficient would capability, and is lethal with good shot placement.

Modern militaries use either the PRC 5.8 mm, NATO 5.56 mm, or Russian 5.45 mm rounds for light weapons, with larger (7.62 mm) rounds for medium machine guns, and .50 cal or 12.7 mm for heavy MGs.

You need the muzzle velocity to get the fragmentation required for the 5.56 M193 round, the M855 (or NATO SS109) has a steel core for penetration, rather than get wounds via fragmentation.

I'm not that well versed with the intended ballistics of the 5.45 x 39, to know if the designers were going for fragmentation, or more "spray & pray" by giving the assault troops 40 round magazines vice 30 round magazines, and more ammunition in the basic load.

There is a relationship between army tactical doctrine, weapon design, and ammunition capabilities. Choosing a particular weapon and ammunition, implies a certain method in which it will be used.
