2/5 Laura Ingraham interview with Rand Paul (17 min)

That was interesting. Thanks for posting it. Man, she sure hammered him about illegal immigration. Well, all Republicans.

The fact is that Republicans have to give a little bit on the immigration issue if they ever want to win another election. The demographics of the country are changing rapidly, and that can't just be ignored. That doesn't mean that the Republicans should just support a full fledged amnesty, but they also have to be careful about the rhetoric they use. They can't just advocate rounding up 11 million illegal immigrants and sending them all home. Rand understands this.

reagan promised to give them amnesty. lost the hispanic vote.

reagan gave them amnesty. lost the hispanic vote.

bush promised to give them amnesty. lost the hispanic vote.

bush tried to give them amnesty. lost the hispanic vote.

mccain tried to give them amnesty. lost the hispanic vote.

just creating more democrats to vote against you.
what they really want is free stuff and banning guns.
that is what they will vote for.

Before I commit to listening to the interview, is she still advocating for Chris Christie as the "anti-establishment" candidate?

You really should not generalize hispanics. The Hispanic vote will become more and more important regardless of what happens with immigration. How do YOU recommend that we win the hispanic vote?

Why does Rand think the Congress will vote in any way that reflects the actual status of the border security? Why didn't Laura ask him that? Has anyone here heard even one single journalist ask him this?

No, they would just ask him how could he be so irrational to have Congress vote instead of legalizing everyone now.

Immigration isn't even the top priority for Hispanic voters according to recent polls. Jobs and the economy is the top issue for Hispanics. Explain to Hispanics that Republicans won't support amnesty or increased immigration until every citizen that wants a job can find one and until wages start rising for the middle and working class.

Rand just thinks that we have to at least take a "reasonable" or less harsh position on the immigration issue before Hispanics will even listen to us and our ideas.

This is true. Immigration though can easily become the #1 issue for Hispanics though if your party botches it.

The way to avoid botching the issue is to frame it as an economic issue rather than a cultural or social issue. This is also a great way to fight back against the Democrat's focus on inequality. There is no question that economic inequality has increased steadily since the 1970's. There are many reasons for this - globalization, Federal Reserve policy, and increased immigration are three. The Republicans' typical strategy of denouncing any discussion of increasing inequality as class warfare or saying that the wealthy are the "job creators" is not going to work. Especially when there are hardly any jobs being created even as the super rich get even wealthier.

The laws of supply and demand apply to the labor market in the same way they do to the rest of the economy. It's very easy for people to understand that an increase in the supply of workers will lower the price of labor. Hispanic citizens who want to move into the middle class are the perfect audience for this message. Hispanics are also younger on average and will appreciate the need to make sure there are jobs available for our high school and college graduates.

I'm not sure if that works either, because it assumes that immigrants only take jobs and do not create them. I think studies have shown that immigrants are responsible for a good chunk of small businesses, and on average might even be more likely to be entrepreneurs and create jobs than their natural-born American peers. It's a great argument for protecting the border though, because illegal immigrants are more often than not going to be job takers. But not necessarily a good argument against increased immigration in general

Do you have a link for those studies? I'm not doubting you; that may very well be true. However, the percentage of voters that become entrepreneurs is pretty small. Plus many small businesses like stores and restaurants are failing right now because their customers are losing purchasing power. Obamacare I think will accelerate this trend but disposable income for the majority of citizens has been stagnant for quite some time.

Also, according to the CBO, any positive effect on job creation brought about by increased immigration is more than offset by the negative effects. The CBO projects that if the Gang of 8 immigration bill is passed, it won't be until the 2020's before employment and wages will recover, let alone improve.

Here's one study from the American Enterprise Institute

I haven't seen the CBO report

Thanks, I'll read it. I can't help but notice that this past decade had the highest level of immigration in our nation's history and has also been one of the worst decades when it comes to job creation. I'll try to find a link to the CBO report I referenced. It was mentioned in the package Senator Jeff Sessions prepared for the House Republicans for their retreat.

Here is a link to Session' discussion of the CBO on immigration's effect on employment and wages: http://www.budget.senate.gov/republican/public/index.cfm/files/serve/?File_id=954900b8-1fdb-4c0d-a3c6-2d0c44a9d806

Sessions is a strong opponent of amnesty and increased immigration so you could say he is biased, but no more so than AEI is in favor of increased immigration.

Yeah, she did. But if you really want to know what she thinks about the immigration issue, you have to listen to her talk with Jack Kingston. It's just below the Rand interview.

She pops a blood vessel or two.
