David Simon, creator of "The Wire" on the End of the American Empire

He was talking about people living in poor areas that sell drugs. He wasn't saying people who sell drugs are doing it to solve an existential crisis. He was saying that people in poor areas with no skills, no jobs and no industries, when they ask themselves "what am I supposed to do with my...

California proposes $7 billion for prison healthcare

You gotta do a crime that gets you into a minimum security prison for less violent offenders. =)

David Simon, creator of "The Wire" on the End of the American Empire

David Simon, creator of "The Wire" on the End of the American Empire. Not talking about military, or the federal reserve, but a thought provoking critique of the class divide, without sounding like the populist John Edwards. My favorite part is about how Hollywood gets "poverty" so wrong...

So much wealth in Orange County?

It's all relative. There's always going to be super rich neighborhoods, because the location itself is nice. Good weather, good shopping, good entertainment and culture, good schools, etc. And lots of people want to live there, so demand for land there goes up, and price goes up. In the end...

Upcoming tax rebate not all it seems to be?

I don't like more gov. spying. But I doubt that anybody who isn't filing a tax return currently, would decide to do so now, if they are going to pay the gov more than $600 by doing so. They would just forgo the refund, and continue to not file.

20 2008 RP Silver Libertys for sale on ebay...

Maybe no one bidding cause this guy has no sell history? Plus using the art pics, rather than actual pics of the 20 coins, indicating even further fishy-ness.

I have a question about backed currencies

Prices would go down, and if gold is in high demand, interest rates would be high. But you don't need a large money supply to expand the economy. Granted the economy will expand slowly, but it won't contract either. When you have money that's too cheap to borrow, then you have rapid growth...

    Currency Conversion Question

It's like why is a quarter worth 500% more than a nickel, but a nickel is worth 80% less than a quarter. 25/5 and 20/25. Or if you have $80 and $100. $80 is worth 20% less than $100. But $100 is 25% more than $80. 20/100, 20/80.

Why did gold go down today?

People selling their gold to buy stocks? People tend to take profits once in a while. Any long term chart going up or down looks nice and steady, but there are many short term bumps along the way.

What causes these huge short term shifts in the Dow?

It's the bandwagon effect. In turbulent volatile times like now, people are unsure how to act. They see the market going up, lots of people (and individual investors) buy, driving up the price further. But when it gets a bit too high, some people want to take profits, and start selling. And...

What Has Happened In Fiat Failures Of The Past?

Usually re-issuance of new currency, or "new" money. Like each 1000 units becomes 1 "new" unit. Also price controls to keep prices down, but if it becomes unworkable, a barter system and/or a black market economy springs up. Or people use the currency of a more stable country. Some...

    Inflation, effect on wages

Well, the only reason we have been able to maintain an increase in real household income is because it used to be just 1 person would have to work, now 2 per household work. I'm guessing the next logical step is that people have to get 2 jobs.
