From my own school days experience, I recommend working with the YR on common causes and staying active in their groups (they tend to be further to the right than the party at large is); in time, you'll find that YAL members will start being invited to run chapters of the YR...:)

I think libertarians and conservatives should, of all groups in modern times, appreciate the fact that not everyone who names themselves as a member of a group (eg Christian) is, in fact, a true member of that group -- just look at a good number of Republicans who are not just big government...
