I would not be opposed if the campaign preemptively announced he was not attending. They have internal polling and can assess whether the upcoming polls will put him in the debate. If not, establishing the narrative prior to the media setting it, in my opinion, is essential.

I honestly have not seen "mainstream" articles on this. No one watches daytime news unless it is during lunch break. There have been no stories in the "major" news sites (CNN, FOX, NYTimes, etc.) This story has not blown up because, while anecdotal, I haven't heard one casual political observer...
