Big Congrats to our German friends on the FDP win!

The FDP is as pro-market as the US Democrats. So, it's not like this is a libertarian revolution in Germany. But you get an idea of how left-wing Germany is when the FDP is considered "market radical" by the Left and Center-Left. For example, the FDP supports a health care system that is less...

Freakonomics by Steven Levitt worth reading?

I agree with that. It's definitely worth a read and quite entertaining. And more generally, it never hurts to read books where ideads different or directly opposed to your views are presented. There is a chance that you are mistaken on some points and others are right. And even if not, your...

Has there been a shift in the media reporting on Israel?

Israel has played tough with all the journalists. They made up all kinds of dubious reasons to prevent reporters from entering Gaza and showing what really is going on there. I guess they have turned those journalists against them. Good, I say!

Legislation: What's your view on smoking bans inside public restaurants?

Non-Smokers who dislike smoke and fear for their health can easily protect themselves by avoiding restaurants where smoking is allowed. No need for government intervention. The smokers can have a smoke in restaurants that allow smoking and the non-smokers can enjoy themselves in non-smoking...

There will never be another Ron Paul

The next Ron Paul might already be someone in this movement. Many people have awaken and will continue to work for liberty and study the ideas of free markets for free people. A couple of them might develop into serious contenders. It will take hard work, time and patience, though. But what else...

The Republican Party Wants a New Direction?

Don't get your hopes up. They will probably think that after seeing a socialist win they will have to become more socialist themselves. It's democracy, if you are a big party you have to adjust to the median voter. It's basic game theory.

Funny LRC blog post about Bernanke's IQ

I love the new comment even more: "Was his result adjusted for inflation?" :D

    Murray Rothbard

Way underrated in general, overrated among some libertarians. I like his writings very much, even if I don't agree with everything, but he is not free from mistakes like some libertarians make him out to be. Still, he has clearly broadened (is that a word?) my thinking like only a few others.

Bernanke May Seek New Tactics as Fed Rate Nears 1%

In the next crisis Bernanke will be right there with Japan and The Great Depression as example of policy failure. The only question is when people will realize that not "wrong" policy is the reason for a crisis, but policy interference in marktes itself is the problem.

Why aren't there Free State Projects in every state?

The idea of the FSP is that there aren't enough liberty-minded people and that they all are isolated in their respective state. So the idea is to bring them all together in one/few states to make a difference. A FSP in every state would ruin the whole idea, because that would not be anything...

Does anyone subscribe to Reason magazine?

That's an issue here, but I think that's not the problem with TReason. I'm fine if they disagree on some points with Ron Paul. I do, too, as do many others here. But they tried everything they could to bash him. It's one thing to debate topics. There has to be debate among libertarians or there...

**German Bank Collapse after 35B Euro Rescue Falls Through**

On topic (sorry ;)): The bank is 100 billion euro short of liquidity. Government is reluctant to bail them out. The subdivision that's responsible for the problem is located in Ireland to avoid German taxes. So German taxpayers will be mad if they have to bail out a bank that doesn't want to...

**German Bank Collapse after 35B Euro Rescue Falls Through**

It's a member of DAX which consists of the top 30 public listed German companies. It's not even sure how bad the situation is. The accountants simply don't know. The bank is rather solid, though. It's one subdivision in Ireland that is in poor condition. They can't refinance due to the general...

Screw American Banks - Swiss Accounts Are The Way To Go

That's really scary. The day a "exit tax" is seriously debated here is the day I will definitely pack my stuff and leave (if I haven't yet) - as long as it's still possible. In socialist Germany we have been even further in the past by building a freaking wall where you got shot when you tried...
