Your printer shouldn't be really that hard to set up. Go to http://127.0.0.1:631/admin. Click "Add Printer" and go through the steps there. On the issue of networking with Windows, have you tried samba? I haven't used it myself, but I have heard good things about it.
Bad memories of trying this on Sidux (I think it was Sidux). I don't even remember what ended up coming of my attempts. Always thought it would be interesting to try out BSD though. I've made my way around the Linux world, maybe I will someday.
