Seeing some reports that a group of WW2 vets from MS have gone up to the WW2 Memorial in D.C. despite warning not to and that the Park Police are now on their way to remove them.... So with this in mind would any activists in the MD/DE/VA/DC areas like to assemble at the Jefferson Memorial tonight at around 8 p.m.? I am being serious... If we can get even just a few dozen people to show up maybe we can get some media attention.

Honor Flight veterans who were told they could not visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. because of the government shutdown reportedly “knocked over” the barricades erected by the National Parks Service on Tuesday in order to gain entry to the grounds.

The Honor Flight network is dedicated to annually transporting World War II veterans from around the country to the memorial in the nation’s capital, which is closed along with other national parks because of the shutdown.

The park police are still financed to stop people from using areas? Which has a greater cost? In what world does this make any sense? /rhetorical

Isn't this a double-edge sword? Yeah I really don't think the shutdown should affect a few veterans from visiting these memorials, but suppose a bunch of activists do show up and they try to spin it as "see, look what damage has been done with the shutdown! These poor veterans can't pay their respects!"

Looks like a bunch of terrorists to me. Officer Friendly and the gang will be paying them a visit.

Even the Park Police probably aren't stupid enough to push back against ~90 year old WW2 veterans. They have to know there's no winning that PR battle.

Putting up barricades around outdoor memorials is so vindictive and counter-productive that even the leftists can't spin that one.

Not sure that anyone else protesting would get as much bang for the buck as WWII veterans.

Visiting veterans storm closed war memorials

WWII vets are storming... really?

So I guess the federal government is going to pretend they don't have the staff to stand around and watch visitors... at the same time they pay staff to harass the visitors. How long until the Park Police show up and start tazing wheelchair bound old men?

I guess I hadn't considered that. It does seem quite an over-reaction to ensure that people really feel the 'sting' of a government shutdown.

Are all parks closed or just high profile ones (for media attention)?

i know... he'd be gettin' all his people out to the Jefferson Memorial at a drop of a hat...
i 'm sore tempted to repost that video of him at the same said memorial being slammed
into the hard marble floor by the powers that be. heck, even if some of the WW2 vets are
closer to 85 because they served during the last 3 to 6 months of the war an' did not leave
the service until 1946, indeedy the very idea of Uncle Sam slamming into them for a tresspass!

I missed a connection in SF once and ended up on an Honor Flight plane to Dulles. Remarkable. The man I sat next to had been in a German POW camp for awhile. He told about US planes firing on the camp one time. And he talked about the Germans abandoning them there as the Russian army approached. Tell someone who's been through those things that he can't visit his generation's own memorial.

Even a wildlife refuge down here is closed (in addition to the Everglades). Dumb. I've been to that park many times, and the only interaction I had with any employees was paying the guy at the gate the entrance fee.
