Ugh... I'm so sick of the way things are. I do what I can to maintain a reasonable level of optimism and mannerliness, but I have to confess my patience gets tried.

I've been a blacksmith since age 16. I am in a few blacksmithing groups on antisocial media. One of the groups is for beginners. A recurring gripe revolves around the difficulties newbies have finding anvils. They are now very costly.

So today I took half an hour out of my day to CAD up a simple, versatile DIY anvil offered as inspiration to innovate and use one's creative abilities to overcome obstacles. You would not believe the reactions of some people. "Well I've worked in tool and die and I can tell you have no experience with doing things like this..." and so on. I guess the seven years I spent as a manual machinist in college doesn't count.

The levels of raw and bitter anger are just mind numbing. Just as with anyone, I have my share of issues, but I have to say that if I lived my life in such a state, I'd just eat a bullet. How can they stand it?

The stench of a dead and decaying society is pungent and permeates everything and everybody living within it.

It fogs the mind and numbs the soul.

It's like The Matrix.

On a more positive note, I set up a small backyard forge and used a hunk of rail for my first anvil.

Cheap and functional.

Bosswife calls such people the "walking dead"... mostly Democrats, but not all.

It's like The Matrix.

It IS the matrix.

This is what I'm talking about. Innovate. If you cannot find a solution, create one."

My friend Kirk Sullens, another fine smith, mentioned yesterday to me that what I'm seeing in terms of this uncivil and ill-bred behavior stems from the fact that the new generation of smiths are not like we old buzzards. They saw Forged in Fire, think they can become wealthy and famous doing blades, and have nothing better as a basis for the endeavor. The smithing community was always hallmarked by good manners, openness, friendliness, fraternity, and generosity. We smiled a lot and always encouraged one another, helped each other, gave shit away for the asking, and had a great sense of unity in our basic humanity. That's largely gone now.

Glad I'm old. Fuck this brave new world.
