I would think the fact that he's had overwhelming media coverage compared to us plays a big role to why he's winning. Tons of Americas will hear Mitt's name and think he's the only republican worth voting for cause he's the only one that has a chance of winning.

Sadly, most people are not smart voters, they spend most of their time trying to be smart consumers.

Let's look at the positive....

On that poll, it showed 95pct of mormons voting Romney and 5pct Paul.

Every other candidate was zero percent! I think that was a huge compliment that there were still mormons that were willing to vote outside of their very tight-knit religion.

Let me explain why I think Romney is doing pretty well. Most conservatives don't like McCain for lots of reasons. Many conservatives are leary of Huckabee on a few issues. Many conservatives like Thompson but see him as old and boring. Guiliani loses most conservatives on guns and social issues. Most conservatives buy the Bush doctrine of war and so they don't care for Ron Paul. Romney is left as a default person to vote for that kinda sorta makes most of the base happy.

Just my take on it.

Mittens is slick, good looking, has gobs of cash and has the greasy smarm of a used car salesman.

He doesn't really have any principles to speak of, as evidenced by his repeated flip flops on major issues, therefore he can sound effective and sincere selling anything or any position.

1) Because politics is about back-room deals! He's probably made deals with the establishment. he gets to be called Mr.President and the MSM push him. In return the bankers etc get what they want.
2) Older people want status-quo. They want stability in their lives. RP's message is radical for them. They'll wake up only if there is a visible disaster affecting the, not before. Romney seems to be the safest bet for status-quo and big government stability.
3) People vote more with their emotions.
