The reason is because a small sample of the population usually represents a larger sample. If 20% of the state votes a certain way it is very likely that the other 80% will vote similarly. This has been proven time and time again. You can then extend this same logic to the entire country, to a lesser degree, because people's political positions are more diverse due to greater geographical distance, but all in all, the makeup of the American electorate is quite predictable. It is true that the libertarian portion is growing. It is up to 10% from 1-2%. But that is still not a majority, nor a large enough minority to win elections. The cold, hard truth that ever libertarian must face is that the rest of the country, and in indeed the world, is not like us. Whether they can be converted is questionable. I happen to believe they can't. Our best real hope for personal liberty is to make changes in our own lives, as suggested by the late Harry Browne in his book "How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World". The political system is a highly inefficient system for change. Its designed to maintain the status quo.

ha! The media has been doing this for decades. Although I won't blame them for individuals not voting, they do know it has an impact "oh, so and so already won. I won't bother to vote."

Being from the west coast, it is a huge deal each year during the general election because the east coast polls are closing just as the west coasters are getting off of work. The media is predicting winners (usually correct) and west coasters don't bother - shame on them!
