I think the article got it wrong. That's the US Dept. of Re-Education, right?

Unless the firearms are for show-and-tell, and to veer away from the indoctrination of the irrational fear of firearms, the DOE should piss off. But, we all know what this is for: the further militarization of all of our government agencies.

Also note worthy is that these are NFA restricted 14" barrel shotguns.

Very expensive and difficult for a mundane to own.

I'm seeing a trend...

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) intends to purchase sixty Remington Model 870 Police RAMAC #24587 12 gauge pump-action shotguns for the Criminal Investigation Division. The Remington parkerized shotguns, with fourteen inch barrel, modified choke, Wilson Combat Ghost Ring rear sight and XS4 Contour Bead front sight, Knoxx Reduced Recoil Adjustable Stock, and Speedfeed ribbed black forend, are designated as the only shotguns authorized for IRS duty based on compatibility with IRS existing shotgun inventory, certified armorer and combat training and protocol, maintenance, and parts.

every Tom, Dick, and Harry government organization is starting their own police force now, rather than hiring rent-a-cops like they used to. real police have more power and thus project more power to the owning organization.

No they WILL purchase it. How ineffectual do you feel upon that revelation?

You have clearly never tried teaching calculus to a bunch of high school students.

They're necessary.

There is an obvious answer that I think you're all missing: to take "No Child Left Behind" to a new level.

Why does the US Dept. of Education need riot guns?

If you're going to incarcerate people for 8 hours a day, but you're not allowed to actually build walls to hold them in, you'll need good guns. :D

Info from other sources that attempt to *explain* these government requests.

All special agents must participate in semi-annual shotgun training.

I did speak with the special agent in charge of the Chicago Office of the Dept of Ed Inspector General office. The work of the IG office includes investigations into fraud and misuse of Dept. of Ed funds. This takes them into environments where they must deal with the criminal element including some bad actors who are armed. Like many others here, I had a hard time connecting the dots between shotguns and the Dept. of Ed. but it is easier to understand in the context of a mandate to investigate criminal fraud.

Where is the BARF smiley?

The State needs to protect itself from dissolving or being dismantled duh!

Its not nearly enough to teach proper shotgun techniques to high school students, so we can be certain of a more nefarious purpose.
