Why Do People Still Believe the New Deal Worked ?

Everyone keeps saying how smart Obama is. I'm just not seeing it.

Doesn't he want his first term to be successful? His stimulus, gas tax hikes, increased regulations and various other government meddling will ensure it will be an unmitigated disaster.

They believe it worked because an "authority" told them that it did (if they have ever even heard of it) And they are taught from a young age not to question "authority".

Open a high school history book. It's not hard to see why people believed FDR was a great president...that's the only thing they've been exposed to!!

I think it's something like a superstitious response: something happens; something else happens after; therefore the first thing causes the second. It is basically confusing correlation with causation.
In this case, FDR did some stuff (although most of the people who will tell you that his actions brought the country out of the Depression can't quite tell you what those actions are or why they might have helped more than doing the opposite) and Whammo, like magic, 14 years later the Depression ended. I suggest asking these people if they think the Depression might have been permanent if not for FDR. Would we still be driving Model T's and wearing fedoras? Would we still be black and white? No, the Depression would almost certainly have ended. Then it might be possible once you've got folks thinking along those lines, to ask if it's just possible that it would have ended sooner.
If you haven't read Bastiat's essay "What Is Seen And What Is Unseen", it's worth a read as it addresses how hard it is to see the actions not taken and the effects these actions did not have.

At least you remember. I do too. This should have the good effects of keeping us patient and of reminding us that there may be hope after all.

Same here. It's easy to assume your teachers are telling the truth. In fact, if your teachers believe, then even they aren't lying. I didn't know better until I started researching for myself, but most people don't do that.

It's great to see homeschooling percentages increase exponentially across the country. I think we'll start seeing appreciable differences in liberty minded/lemming population ratios between high homeschooling regions and high government indoctrination center regions. Maybe we already have those differences ?

Cause people don't look into history at all. Hell even in my history classes (history major in my last 2 classes for my BA) I have had people surprise me with their lack of knowledge of history.

Whether it be from fear of offending people, an actual desire to keep people uninterested in it, or both, they sure do their level best to make history boring as hell, don't they?

Well, by causing people to want to refuse to learn from it...

It is completely because of going to public school. I distinctly remember asking what got us out of the depression and being told that it was the New Deal and WWII. I think we forget that these public school teachers are making $45-$75k and that they are middle class. They went to public school and were told the same information too. Only liberals want to teach at public schools because they believe in the system.
