Why didn't Mac challenge Bush in '04 for nomination, based on Iraq policy?

McCain and Palin like to say that he differed with Bush from the start on the execution of the war. Now, assuming you believe the war is just (a faulty assumption, but I think Mac believes that), why wouldn't you do everything in your power to make sure it was carried out right? If you are a true "maverick," you would put country, the safety & security of our troops first and take the political risk to try and unseat and incumbent.

But no. McCain hit the campaign trail for Bush instead. In the first two years of Bush's second term, more than 1,500 American troops were killed in Iraq. Thus far in 2008, some 900 have died. Now, on the one hand McCain wants to say the surge has "worked," but on the other, he doesn't seem to want to talk about anything other than "winning" when it comes to his current Iraq strategy. Doesn't he know the surge is over and American troops are still dying there? And that is what he calls "working"?

Shameless.
