What's Your Opinion on the So-Called "Earnings Gap"?

We always hear that women make less than men, and it is up to government to fix this. Is there really an 'earnings gap'? The research I've seen is shoddy, at best. Plus, I can't imagine lawyers would let this go without cashing in a big pay day. Is there anything that is more concrete to reinforce this claim?

It's comparing apples and scorpions.

I make less than the Executive Director!!! Of course, he makes less than his female boss.

Women are more likely to take time off to have their kids and raise them. Women are more likely to be saddled with familial burdens of other sorts. Most of the women I know had their lives interrupted in some fashion they could not get away from, and as a result their resume has a gap, or they did not get the degree or certification they might have. They stayed in a lower position to have more flexible hours. They went into a clerical or low-level medical field and make less than the doctors at the top. In other words, if I average out the women I know and the men I know, the men make more money but not without reason.

Yes there is an earnings gap. But it is completely irrelevant and worthless, and anyone making some appeal about inequality using it is is ignorant or engaged in perfidy. Usually the former.

There is also an earnings gap between young people and old. No one claims that employers wage discriminate against people 18-30. No one argues that Social Security should actually be taken from workers 30 and older and transferred to people 18-30 to redistribute wealth to those who are actually poor.

Yea, logic and facts. Logic.....women complain that there are not enough women in high positions, such as presidents, CEOs, management, etc. I would argue that there is a flip side;there aren't enough women in low positions. When was the last time you saw a woman digging a ditch? Working construction? Collecting garbage? Catching crabs on a boat off the coast of Alaska? The simple laws of supply and demand tell me that when 51% of the population refuse to do an in demand job, then wages have to be increased in order to attract labor.

And the facts......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92upq_osUec

If there truly were an earnings gap, then a sophisticated businessman would cut costs by employing only women. If men get paid more for the same work, then why are employers systematically overpaying for x amount of work? Wouldn't somebody have recognized this obvious arbitrage opportunity and exploited it to their advantage? How are men still able to get jobs?

My thoughts, as well.

We all make ourselves our own victims when we dismiss the responsibility of fixing the problem ourselves. That is, if there is even a problem.

Compare African American women with degrees to white women with degrees.

You'll be informed.

Even if women make a few cents an hour less than men, they still benefit from an enormous amount of social privileges.
-Women can't be drafted (yet).
-Women can get sex whenever they want practically.
-Women can often get out of doing certain physical tasks at work.
-If a woman is unemployed, she can be a homemaker, or stay at home mom, while a man would just be called a loser.
-Men need to make more money in order to find a mate.
-Women often get the kids in family courts.
-Women get more bathroom stalls, while men just get a toilet or two and a bunch of urinals (really sucks if you have a case of the Dire-D).
-Women are allowed to show more emotion.

I could go on and on. I think that it would actually be more advantageous to be a woman.

There's a surgery for that.

I make a lot less than most people and I'm not happy about it. Please help me close the gap with donations. PM me for where to send the donation.

This is simply well decorated BS. The differences in incomes can be explained quite clearly to a rational mind. However, with politics its all about whipping up emotion to facilitate expropriation. The pretext to loot matters not, the looting is, and always be, the goal of politicians looking to divide and confuse.

There's probably not an earnings gap right now for two people doing the same job. There is an employment gap forming though.

Women make up 47% of the labor force and only 8% of work related deaths. In the name of this incredibly unjust situation, we need equal deaths for equal work! Everyone write your congressmen to pass the Lily Bloodletter Act now!

EQUAL DEATHS FOR EQUAL PAY!!
EQUAL DEATHS FOR EQUAL PAY!!

One reason women even have to work is due to the decline in the purchasing power of the dollar. I really don't care if the man or the woman works, but thanks to our increasingly worthless fiat dollar, one or both parents might have to work two jobs these days, whereas 50 years ago, one income was enough to support a family. No one seems to focus on that aspect, apparently distracted by this whole 'pay equality' debate.

Then you think about the effect it has on children in those families, who don't get as much parental involvement in their lives.
