[h=1]What States are the Freest? This Map Shows Americans Where to Go If They Crave Liberty[/h]
The John Locke Foundation just published its First In Freedom Index, a report that compares and ranks the relative freedom of all fifty states.

The North Carolina-based think tank says it has an institutional commitment to “individual liberty and limited, constitutional government,” weighed four different variables to compile the rankings.

The most significant consideration was fiscal policy, which measures taxes and budgetary measures. This aspect generated 50 percent of each state’s score, with 20 percent given each to education and regulatory policies, and the final 10 percent to health care policy.

Here’s a graphic representation of the country:

The overall results from the report show:

  1. The ‘freest’ state is Florida, followed by Arizona, Indiana, South Dakota, and Georgia.
  2. The ‘least free’ state is New York, followed by New Jersey, California, West Virginia, and Kentucky.
These are the state rankings based solely on fiscal policy:

These are the educational freedom rankings:

Here are the states’ rankings based upon regulatory freedom:

And lastly, here are the rankings for health care freedom:

i feel pretty free when i'm in a stoner state....usually after 8pm every night.

FL GA and LA more free than NH?

Florida theft per person per year: $1,279.66
New Hampshire theft per person per year: $1,725.03

Advantage: Florida.

Florida per-capita spending waste, graft, and stupidity: $3,578.76
New Hampshire per-capita waste, graft, and stupidity: $3,796.11

Advantage: Florida.

Rural northern Florida is not actually all that different than New Hampshire, AF. You'd probably like it.

I've been looking at property in Kentucky and was momentarily disappointed. Then I remembered that I know who Nick Christie was and how he died IN FLORIDA, so yeah, the authors are on crack.

Exactly. It all depends on what you look at, and what you care about. Also, all states have parts of the state that are freer than others. Northern Florida is very good from what I have heard from residents there. I certainly don't agree entirely with the maps, but I think they have reasons for rating the states as they do.

LOL! I don't recall ever hearing AF say a nice word about anywhere in the South.:p

Does the State of Insanity count? Im not sure it actually matters, all the States and Districts and Territories (like the District of Criminals) are all just Passengers on the USS Titanic.

These people are on crack.

Only a few factors were looked at. The organization admitted that it didn't touch civil rights/civil liberties/social issues. So if you don't care about guns, marijuana, privacy, rights and the like, this is a good index. Reason mentioned that the Freedom in the 50 States rating is better. Of course, it looks at several times as many factors.

Here is the most recent Freedom in the 50 States chart.

Florida and Texas more free? Try smoking a joint and let me know how that goes for you.

Yeah, I don't get it. Florida is 45th on regulatory freedom so how are they a number 1 free state. Regulatory Freedom should be the sole category a free state is judged.

Pfft. I don't know what they are basing this shit off.

Arizona at #2 with Sheriff Arpaio.

Might as well call it the Adolf Hitler Foundation.

The largest cities in AZ are stealing water from other states. How the fuck is this about freedom?

Well at least they nailed the worst liberty minded states.. NY and NJ.... I concur with them on that pick...

My .02

Well, I can put up with the BS in Minnesota as long as I'm free to Ice fish every winter.
