I know it was not the New Deal, or World War Two, that got us out. I'm in a debate on another forum about this and need to get hooked up with some good info. I thought I read an article about this on C4L recently but I can't find it, maybe it was elsewhere.

Roosevelt dying.

But is seriousness, it was a return to a free-er market. All of the crap the government did squandered resources and blocked recovery. Once most of that was gone, the market was free to fix itself.

The war forced americans to save, and then when the war was over the goverment cut spending and reduced regulations.

Less regulations + savings = economic growth.

If you search at http://mises.org you will find articles explaining it for sure.

The US was also one of the very few nations with an large industrial base left standing after the war.

Cutting government spending after the war.

No it was industrialization left ovef from the war and the rebuilding of much of the rest of the world. It had very little to do with government spending. The US arouse from the ashes of WWII at a serious advantage due to no battles or none of the war being fought on our soil and like someone else said our infrastructure and industry remained intact. That was not the case in any other area of WWII. Government could have increased taxes and spending and it wouldn't have mattered. The US economy was a powerhouse back then due to war.

War is on the horizon don't worry.......you'll be able to experience it first hand soon.

Two things:

-The scaling back of government programs (like the wartime positions) after WWII.
-Our competitors were literally blown apart, so the only two competitors for industry were the United States and the Soviet Union. Which one do you think is going to attract business?

If it wasn't for WWII, FDR would probably not have gotten his 3rd term.

You folks are missing one big reason ...

Who held most of the Gold and thus the reserve currency of the world at the end of the war?

What makes you think we ever got out of the Great Depression?
Imagine the roaring twenties as a bender. The Great Depression was the next morning. Rather than trying to sleep it off, FDR's government started taking shots again (borrowing). There are only so many days in a row that you can do this before you end up drowning in your own puke--and we are already crawling around in the gutter.

We were out of depression during the war. (Depression ended around 1940, war ended 1945).

Because the military employed everyone would be correct, but unpopular around here.

Unpopular because it's wrong.

If government make work jobs in the military were the answer, the USSR should have been the most wealthy nation on earth.

Got this in email, dont know who sent it, or who else got it. So i want to share it with u guys:

friends, i just realized something, and need to share it with you.

The Federal Reserve Bank, which was created by the major banks, has bought US treasuries, other banks, and mortgage debt vouchers. Essentially increasing their physical wealth, by owning hard fixtures like banks and homes. All while flooding the market with paper currency, which is backed by nothing. Inflation: up, homeless: up, jobless: way up, gold: up. The dollar has been down, but in the past month it has bounced back, because other countries are going bankrupt basically.

The buying of banks and homes, is exactly what the big banks did when they orchestrated the Great Depression. Except now they have formed an all encompassing, government mandated secret private bank, which now owns our country, you, me, everybody.

I believe, just as the GD lasted many long years after the first purchases, this (newly admitted on TV) Recession will by no means end soon. BO is in for 3 more years, there is sooo much more that can be done. Remember the first 4 years of GB2 is when we had directive 51 and all the other illegal directives that gives the Pres all the power to call himself Imperator (emperor).

they've done it again, they win and the rest of us lose big time. sucks to be the bottom 98%. hmmm, thats a lot of us.....

Top Income Tax rate was cut from 94% to 86% after the war...can't understand how such a tiny tax cut spurred economic growth....imagine if we had top tax rates of 86% today.

The tax limit was not really effective. The law had all times of loopholes so nobody was paying that. Having the income tax at 94% was only a FDR propagandist gimmick.

Saying that the dollar became the reserve currency because the USA had the most gold is a strecht. The fact that the USA had the biggest military also had to do with the rest of the nations accepting the dollar as a reserve currency. Since the beggining of the XX century the USA has been using its army to force the dollar as currency on other nations. You can see that in Cuba, Mexico and other central and sourth american countries. Also in Filipinas, and they even tried (and failed) in China. And all this using military force and before IIWW.
