Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - Senator Rand Paul is considered a top contender to run for president in 2016. He has been forming relationships in minority communities in Louisville.

Senator Gerald Neal said his views about Paul are not personal; it's time to look deeper.

"I find that the positions that he takes are antithetical to the interests of the black community. Those who do not loko deeper and challenge him give him a pass on something that is unwarranted," Neal said.

Paul has been seen recently in the West End of Louisville, attending several events with Pastor Kevin Cosby of St. Stephen Church.

"Whether you agree or not, (he) has his finger on the pulse of the urban community," Cosby said.

Not surprising, but Neal is very non-specific about what positions Rand has that he views as being "antithetical" to the interests of the black community.

Neal said, "He will push those nice little buttons. He makes people respond. Oh, yes, he's for that--I'm for that. But when you get down to the fundamental things, it's antithetical."

My guess is that Neal is one of those politicians who would like to keep his constituents poor, so he can dole out perks in exchange for votes, rather than advocate for policies (like Rand's Enterprise Zone concept) that would promote lifting them out of poverty .

A man who's job depends on black people voting over 90% Democrat is unhappy that Rand might show convince some of them to vote differently. I cannot wait to hear his completely objective insight on why Rand Paul is bad for African-Americans.

Wearing a bow tie and saying words like antithetical makes one look smart. And what he thinks is Paul's views that are antithetical to the black community is his opposition to welfare and other govt used to used buy off the black vote. But not even Rand is calling for the end of welfare.

May I use your post as exhibit A of how not to respond to this man's claims?

Rand kinda looked uncomfortable around them. I'm not surprised he can't explain the views that are antithetical.

Well he looked more comfortable than Romney, or frankly just about any other GOP politician. Practice makes perfect

media likes to edit scenes of people making faces.. rand might have something on his mind during those 3 second clips, but if clips are shown of him completely plain and calm it wouldn't make much good tv. rand is doing fine, he is on a mission that is good and proper

I hate this whole "race" (whatever happened to believing in the human race?) thing.
How would you like to be the black reporter who had to introduce the story? "Oh great. A report about a senator talking to "black people" and "black people" talking about the senator ... nice to be reduced to "just" being a "black reporter" who has to introduce the story cause, ya know, "I'm black"".

Or as the Daily Show puts it, the "Senior Black Correspondent."

Geez, so tough, you must be from Chris Christie land.

On a more serious note, can you give us an exhibit on how to respond properly? I haven't thought of one.

Not really, its not my crowd. As many things in life, its easier to criticize than it is to do better.

I don't volunteer an exhibit, but just going out on a limb here, I am sure a proper response would probably have something to do with respect, not insulting his intelligence (or implying that he wouldn't "look" intelligent without the bowtie), and not assuming evil or corrupt motives.

^ This....and I think such a response could boil down to first asking this State Senator for specifics so that an answer to his concerns or lack of belief in Rand's "solutions" can be addressed. At this point, we don't KNOW what his concerns are since he spoke in the vaguest of generalities, as politicians are wont to do.

Bingo. Time to reach out and unite, in a real sense as opposed to the usual political lip service. Dividing the electorate will not win. Rand is listening and it is the right thing to do.
