Froman: US aiming for TPP deal by year-end

The top US trade official says talks on the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement are gaining momentum despite the complexity of negotiations.

US Trade Representative Michael Froman told an audience in Washington on Tuesday that he hopes a deal can be reached by year-end.

Froman participated in the latest round of TPP talks in Malaysia through last week, which Japan joined for the first time as the 12th member.

Froman said members are working to achieve a goal higher than any deal ever concluded, and that they are motivated despite the challenges ahead.

In Malaysia, trade officials reached agreements in some areas, but opinions remain divided over tariff cuts.

Froman said the APEC meeting in October would provide an important chance for leaders to give the TPP talks further momentum.

The US trade representative said Japan's participation in the deal lifts the importance of the TPP.

But he said the US will urge Japan to further open its insurance, automobile, and agricultural markets through bilateral talks held in parallel with the TPP negotiations.
