A picture showing a US Marine scout sniper team posing in front of what appears as a flag of the notorious Nazi organization SS, has surfaced online. The Marine Corps confirmed that the embarrassing photo taken in Afghanistan is real.
The use of the SS symbol in not acceptable and the Corps has addressed the issue, Lt. Col. Stewart Upton said in a statement Thursday.
He did not elaborate on what measures have been taken, but stressed that the Marines shown in the picture are no longer with the unit.
The picture circulating on the internet was taken in September 2010 in Afghanistan’s Sangin province.
The Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) in Washington said it was outraged by the photograph.

“Heads need to roll and this needs to be fully investigated,” said Mikey Weinstein, founder of MRFF.
The Marines posing in the photo wanted to identify themselves as scout snipers, not Nazis, reports the British newspaper Daily Mail, citing a spokesman of the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.
The SS, or Schutzstaffel, was the military wing of the German Nazi Party. They played an essential part in many crimes against humanity, including the genocide of Jews in territories controlled by the Third Reich.
The twin Sig rune, resembling two lightning bolts, was used as the insignia of the criminal organization.
The scandal comes less than a month after the US Marines were marred by another scandal. Several of its scout snipers were filmed while urinating on dead bodies of Taliban militants. The tape surfaced on the internet, causing public uproar and official condemnation of the desecration.

Came across these as well, apparently it had been going on for a few years or something:

They are sniper scouts. Hence the SS.Also runes are not "nazi" symbols.

you signed up just to make this post?

It's true that runes are not Nazi symbols, but it's the only known usage for 70 years in the western world.

They are putting their life on the line for this unjust war, they should be able to wear what they want to.

I got money they just think its "cool" are a completely clueless as to their historical significance.

If anyone is a new Hitler it's Benjamin Netanyahu.

This has been around for quite a while. It's not like they were trying to glorify the Nazis. I'm not saying it's a good idea, but they were doing this well before 9/11:

It's really a failure of leadership who should have known it was going to blow up some day. Most likely the folks who did this were counting on it 'striking fear into the hearts of the enemy,' and 'fear is the mind-killer.' It's not like they were trying to glorify Nazis or demonstrate antisemitism, They were just trying to evoke fear in their enemies. The idea being if you can evoke fear in the enemy, you are more likely to survive and achieve victory, while the enemy is more likely to die in defeat.

So yeah, it was a dumb idea, but they were doing this in the 1990's at least, maybe as far back as the 70's. The failure wasn't with this one squad, but with leadership who should have known this was a PR disaster waiting to happen and put a lid on it a decade ago or earlier.

Sure, that wouldn't surprise me. Still think it warrants attention. It's not like this reflects every marine or anything, and it's still a terrifying look at what war does to people.

I love the bottom/last picture. Look at the smug smirks on their faces.

"Herr Herr. Hitler was so cool. Herr Herr. Like. A total Bad Ass. Herr Herr. We have big guns like they did. Herr Herr."

No. I signed up around the first of February actually haven't found anything worth replying to yet. Maybe they decided to make the s rune part of their unit since people seem to have a problem with its usage before this.

There is a dark cold pit in hell reserved for those who worship the SS. And there are more of us here willing to take up arms against the nazi fascists than not. Something for the fascists to think about when drumming up ideas that the liberty movement has a place for them. The vast majority of the liberty movement would rather die than see a world where fascists have a say in governance.

Like hell, there is a place for fascists within the liberty movement --a cold and dark one.

Do you...seriously...believe that these kids were worshipping the Nazi SS?

They are kids, and they thought the symbol looked 'cool,' and not one of them probably even had grandparents around to remember Nazism first hand. I bet the most they thought of it in reference to Nazis was that it would evoke fear. Was it stupid? No question. However it's also stupid to assume that a bunch of 19 and 20 year old kids are trying to use the symbol to resurrect an ideology that went kaput 70 years ago.

To them, it's just cool and scary, and since scout-snipers are cool and scary too it works in their universe.

They have been using the SS symbol for scout snipers for some-odd 30 years now. The failure is a failure of leadership to put the kibosh on it since anybody with more than two brain cells to rub together should have known that this was going to blow up one day.

But assuming these kids were proto-Nazis is just ignorant. I bet if you go back in history and look hard enough, you can find some sort of atrocities committed by the Ryuku Kingdom in Okinawa, and therefore claim that the Hidari Gomon symbol in your avatar means you support those atrocities too.

I don't support the use of the SS logo by these kids or scout snipers in general, it's blatantly stupid. But then so is your post accusing them of worshipping Nazis.

So I'm guessing Kiss is anti-semitic too? Even though Gene Simmons (real name Chaim Weitz) is an Israeli Jew...

I love the moronic term - "Self-Hating Jew". I heard it all of the time when dealing with the Jews against Israel. Most people are not aware that there several sects of Judaism, just like Christianity. Not all of them get along, and to say that they must get along is further collectivism.

I do not condone the usage of the SS symbolism, but Teutonic mysticism is rather prominent in the Combat arms.

People tend to over react when they see the symbolism used outside of the NDSAP party. I myself have worn the skull, and I'm of Germanic descent. I have no affiliation of the NAZI party and do not hold it's belief's in any shape or form. My ancestry is directly from the Hessians during the Revolutionary war. My Great-great-great-great-Grandfather was brought over as Grenadier. He wore the Skull then. Most of the Uniform, pins and awards are still in the family.. The skull has been around and in use since the days of the Roman Empire.

The skull literally means that you are willing to fight to the death.
