Can he trump California setting their own restrictions?

California gets a special waiver from the Clean Air Act section 209 to set its own vehicle emissions standards. The EPA prevents states from setting their own rules, but CA has been getting waivers to set them more restrictive.

Trump's EPA revoked that waiver earlier this year. Automakers rejoiced. But California is suing to get them back. (There were 10 other "ZEV" states that joined the lawsuit). It'll come down to the judges and eventually the Supreme Court.

I will say, though, that the industry appears to be acting as if that waiver will not get reinstated.

This is the only rational thing to do. Unless there is competition to electric cars the electric cars won't have a competing force to drive prices down.

The demand for electricity will only grow and making every car into electric cars dramatically reduces the amount of electricity available for other things like manufacturing or AI driving the prices of stuff that requires electricity up exponentially.
