A working list of Donald Trump's foreign policy statements on Iraq. It will be added to over time.

  • Trump would not have gone into Iraq

The interview is in 2011; the year of publication of Trump's book, "Time to Get Tough: Making America #1 Again."

In the interview, Trump did not nuance his position which is laid out more precisely in his book. His position is that the US should not be the world's policeman, but if we take on the responsibility, the nation we are 'protecting' must pay the cost of the effort and compensate the US and allied families for their sacrifice of death and injury.

Excerpts from Chapter TWO, TAKE THE OIL

When you do someone a favor, they say thank you. When you give someone a loan, they pay you back. And when a nation like the United States sacrifices thousands of lives of its own young servicemen and women and more than a trillion dollars to bring freedom to the people of Iraq, the least—the absolute least—the Iraqis should do is pick up the tab for their own liberation.

How much is it worth to them to be rid of the bloodthirsty dictatorship of Saddam Hussein and to have gained a democracy in which they can vote and have a freely elected parliament? In reality, that’s a priceless gift, although after being blown to pieces, many people think that they were better off before.

When I say they should pay us back, I’m not even talking about cash out of their pockets. All I’m asking is that they give us, temporarily, a few flows of oil — enough to help pay us back and help take care of the tens of thousands of families and children whose brave loved ones died or were injured while securing Iraqi freedom. But does Iraq do that? No. In fact, they’ve made it clear they have no intention of doing so. Ever.

... So, if Iran is going to take over the oil, I say we take over the oil first by hammering out a cost-sharing plan with Iraq. If we protect and control the oil fields, Iraq will get to keep a good percentage of its oil — not to mention its independence from Iran — and we will recoup some of the cost of liberating the Iraqis and also pay back the nations that fought with us in the war.

And I want to repay the families of the soldiers who died or were terribly wounded. Of course, nothing can ever replace a lost life or a lost limb, but we can send the children of dead or badly wounded veterans to college, provide compensation to the spouses of our service members killed in Iraq, and make sure that wounded veterans are properly looked after. It’s common sense, and peanuts compared to what is lying under Iraq’s land. Each American family who lost a loved one in Iraq should be given $5 million, and our wounded veterans should be given money, perhaps $2 million each plus medical costs.

... But we’re not the world’s policemen. And if we have to take on that role, we need to send a clear message that protection comes at a price. If other countries benefit from our armed forces protecting them, those countries should cover the costs. Period.

So Trump tells us in the book WHY he would take the oil, and that taking the oil is TEMPORARY to cover the costs of the war and the suffering of the people who fought the war. It does not tell us whether he would have fought the war in the first place. I believe others have words of his saying he would not have gone into Iraq in the first place if it was up to him.

Later in the FOX interview, Trump says ...

24:12 "You stay and you protect the oil and you take the oil and you take whatever is necessary for them and you take whatever is necessary for us and we pay ourselves back a trillion and a half dollars or more. We take care of Britain and other countries that helped us, and we don't be so stupid.

LIBYA
27:35 "I hear that the so-called rebels (Libyan rebels) ... You know, we make them look like heroes. I hear they are very inspired by Iran and by Al Queda. So how about we make it possible for them to take over Kadafi and Libya? And then at the end of the whole process they turn out to be worse. And that could happen. Mark my words.

AFGHANISTAN
30:49
Q: Afghanistan ... What I'm getting from you though is you would withdraw US troops out of Afghanistan.
A: "Yes, I would."

I had not paid any attention to Trump until his announcement speech. I had not read any of his books. I had watched The Apprentice one time to see what the hype was about -- then never watched it again. All I knew about Trump was what the media had conditioned me to believe about Trump and what I was told about Trump by people who learned everything they knew about Trump from the media.

I took serious notice of him for the first time after his announcement speech and seeing how strongly he came out about securing the border and renegotiating 'free' trade and making it fair trade. I was further intrigued after watching the way he handled the fire storm created by his illegal alien and border security remarks. Wanting to learn more, I bought his book and began to watch his interviews and speeches.

I've learned that Trump sometimes speaks and writes in a confusing way by stating the position that he opposes first then he slaps it down. I've heard some people say that he didn't write the book, but the book reads just like the way he speaks. Here's an example.

"I hear that the so-called rebels (Libyan rebels) ... You know, we make them look like heroes. I hear they are very inspired by Iran and by Al Queda. So how about we make it possible for them to take over Kadafi and Libya? And then at the end of the whole process they turn out to be worse. And that could happen. Mark my words."

Notice how he says, "So how about we make it possible for them to take over Kadafi and Libya?" This is the argument he's going to knock down ... watch. He follows this with, "And then at the end of the whole process they turn out to be worse. And that could happen. Mark my words."

This is a bit confusing to me and most likely to many others. I would recommend that Trump more clearly state the position he is going to knock down before he knocks it down. But, alas, neither Trump nor Paul care what I think.

Trump tells Bush: 'You're fired'

Donald Trump to President Bush: You're fired!

The billionaire host of NBC's The Apprentice has weighed in on the Bush administration's decision to invade Iraq, terming it a "brutal mistake" that would "make it very hard for Bush to get re-elected".

Trump's numerous development projects have been crimped by the war.

"You can't get concrete. You can't get steel. You can't get anything in this country," he said.

"You know where all our steel's going? It's going to Iraq, because we're rebuilding Iraq."

Trump made the comments last night at the NBC-owned Universal Studios amusement park, where the network threw a party for television critics and the stars of its new and returning series.

The Apprentice became NBC's biggest hit last season, with Trump emerging as an even bigger celebrity than he had been.

"Look, the war is a disaster. The war should not have been entered into," he told The Dallas Morning News while his fiancee, Melania Knauss, looked on.

"To lose all of those thousands and thousands of people, on our side and their side. I mean, you have Iraqi kids, not only our soldiers, walking around with no legs, no arms, no faces. All for no reason. It is a disgrace."

The Bush campaign declined to comment but noted that the president in a speech today had forcefully defended his decision to go to war.

Trump has contributed $US2,000 ($A2,760) each to President Bush's and Democrat John Kerry's campaigns, according to http://www.fundrace.org. But he said that events in Iraq had soured him on the current administration.

"No matter how much you hate Saddam Hussein, and obviously he was a horror show, he kept terrorists out of Iraq," Trump said.

"... 'Let me explain first of all — this [Ukraine] is Europe’s problem much more than ours, OK?' Trump told CNN during a trip to Scotland.

"... 'But why isn’t Germany leading this one?' Trump asked. 'You know Germany is a very rich, very powerful nation. Why aren’t they dealing on it more so? Everything the United States — we’re like the policeman of the world.'"
