Trump doing "Carson" on Cruz: I am an evangelical.. not a lot of evangelicals come out of Cuba

Seems like tried and tested formula Trump is using on Rafael Ted Cruz in Iowa. If this worked, Cruz may drop in Iowa ahead of coming fight there:

Donald Trump brings up Ted Cruz's Cuban ancestry at rally

Real-estate mogul Donald Trump contrasted his own "evangelical" beliefs with US Sen. Ted Cruz's (R-Texas) religious beliefs at a Friday-night campaign rally.
"I am an evangelical. I'm a Christian. I'm a Presbyterian," Trump said, speaking in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Republican presidential front-runner then highlighted the fact that Cruz's father is Cuban.
"We're doing really well with the evangelicals," he continued. "And by the way, and again, I do like Ted Cruz, but not a lot of evangelicals come out of Cuba, in all fairness. It's true. Not a lot come out. But I like him nevertheless."

Trump's comments about Cruz's religion were somewhat similar to what he said about presidential rival Ben Carson's own Seventh-day Adventist faith earlier this year, when Carson was challenging Trump in Iowa polls.

"I love Iowa. And look, I don't have to say it: I'm Presbyterian. Can you believe it?" Trump said then at a rally while discussing Carson's Iowa poll numbers. "I'm Presbyterian. Boy, that's down the middle of the road, folks, in all fairness. I mean, Seventh-day Adventist, I don't know about. I just don't know about."

Like Carson then, Cruz just started to surge in Iowa, the influential first caucus state, though a pair of recent polls disagreed about whether Trump or Cruz was ahead there. Evangelical voters have an outsize role in Iowa's Republican electorate.

This isn't going to have any effect. Outside of those who already support Trump, evangelicals aren't going to let him tell them what an evangelical is.

I'm not so sure, in a tight race it could make a difference.

Trump is also hitting Cruz as "Oil lobby Senator from Texas" and "oil is bad for Iowa's Ethanol industry".

Looks to me like Trump is drawing first blood here, any of the Trump worshipers want to tell me again about how Trump will play nice with you if you play nice with him?

Looks to me like Trump is drawing first blood here, ...

Not exactly but he has has opened a new front... while still leaving a carrot dangling of possible SC seat for Cruz cuz "he likes Cruz" LOL

Trump says Cruz not qualified to be president,Hillary ‘Killed Hundreds of Thousands of People’

“Evangelical Presbyterian”??? Give me a break. Seriously, The Tronald is just trolling now. I mean, nobody could believe this shit, right??? He must be laughing his ass off each night when he goes home…

…And yet…the rubes just keep eating it up. He probably can’t believe it, either.

Good point.

But one must give credit to the Tronald for knowing his target rubes.

Historically, the term evangelical does describe Presbyterianism accurately as it has been a church with a heavy focus on reforming and converting others. However, in the context of American Evangelicalism where it's all about charismatic superstition, yeah, Presbyterianism about as close as you can get to the exact mirror opposite. And while the PCUSA is basically a hotbed for commies and baby-killers, last time I checked they weren't babbling gibberish during worship or gyrating to jazz music during the benediction.

Church says Donald Trump is not an 'active member'

Washington (CNN)Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump told reporters Thursday that he attends a church in Manhattan, but the church released a statement saying the real estate developer is not an "active member."

"I am Presbyterian Protestant. I go to Marble Collegiate Church," he told reporters in Greenville, S.C.

Marble Collegiate Church was founded in 1628 and is one of the oldest continuous Protestant denominations in the country. The church is part of the Reformed Church in America denomination and is on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

Trump has expressed admiration for Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, the author of the self-help book "The Power of Positive Thinking," and the pastor at Marble Collegiate Church for 52 years from 1932 until 1984, according to the church website. Peale died in 1993.

"Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, The Power of Positive Thinking was my pastor," Trump said Tuesday. "To this day one of the great speakers I've seen. You hated to leave church. You hated when the sermon was over. That's how great he was at Marble Collegiate Church."

Trump, who previously said he's never asked God for forgiveness, told reporters he attends church "as often as I can, a lot" and attends different churches since he travels so much.

Following Trump's announcement, the church released a statement to CNN about his affiliation.

"Donald Trump has had a longstanding history with Marble Collegiate Church, where his parents were for years active members and one of his children was baptized. However, as he indicates, he is a Presbyterian, and is not an active member of Marble," the statement said.

Trump was born in Queens, where he said he originally went to church.

"The church I was originally with was the First Presbyterian Church in Jamaica, which is out in Queens," he said. "I've just had great experiences at church, whether it is Sunday School or whatever it may be, but now I go to Marble Collegiate Church."

The First Presbyterian confirmed to CNN on Friday that Trump attended Sunday School and was confirmed there.

politics is reality tv

I think if we are to ever win it really is time to start assuming that voters are dumb as shit and going from there, that seems like essentially what Trump has done.

Good arguments.

And Cruz spox still seems not ready to stand up against the hot Trumpster windmill:

There is an interesting trajectory of Trump attacks of branding his opponents "not real Christians like us". And it works like a charm on GOP base:

Trump Target 1 : Obama

Trump: "Some people believe US already has elected a Muslim President"

Trump Target 2 : Ben Carson

Trump: In All Fairness, I just don't know bout 7DAs

Trump Target 3: Ted Cruz
Trump: In All Fairness, to the best of my knowledge, not a lot of evangelicals come out of Cuba. Just remember that (flashes Bible to crowd for good measure)

If I was Rand, if he's on the same stage as Donald Trump at the next debate he should ask Trump to actually quote something from the bible and explain what it means. Then again, the only problem with this approach is that the average "evangelical" in Iowa or anywhere else in the bible belt probably hasn't read much of it either, so it probably wouldn't do any damage to Trump's support.

Honestly, despite my heavy interest in Christianity and my steadfast belief thereof, I don't really have a solid answer for how to appeal to the people that comprise America's Evangelical base, they are all as good as pagans to me.

You are most likely correct about Trump. But if goal is to win GOP base, Rand going after Trump will be the absolutely wrong use of debate time at this stage.
If Trump and Rand were running neck n neck, then maybe it would help.

Can Rand win GOP base without fiercely attacking Obama?
