The Trump administration has asked states to bury their unemployment figures as swathes of people sign on to jobless benefits amid the coronavirus shutdown.
Gay Gilbert, from the Department of Labour, allegedly sent an email to states this Wednesday asking them not to publish their own numbers because the data 'is being closely watched by financial markets'.
She insisted that the federal government will publish national figures each Thursday as the crisis plays out amid one of the sharpest economic downturns in history.
Economists have warned that the US is already in recession as businesses are either forcibly shuttered or asked to send workers home in an attempt to slow the spread of coronavirus, which has overwhelmed health services in countries such as Italy.
