Senate Votes on Immigration Reform Bill
This week, the Senate voted to pass the Immigration Reform Bill with a vote of 68-32. I voted against the bill for one simple reason: The legislation does not secure the border first.
Earlier this month, I introduced an amendment, known as the "Trust But Verify Act." This amendment to the Immigration Reform Bill would make immigration reform contingent upon Congress writing a strong border security plan, congressional votes on border security every year for five years, completion of a double-layered border fence, two new national security visa screening programs, and protection against any Obama administration attempts to force American citizens to carry around a biometric national identification card. My amendment ensured that Congress, and not the usual unaccountable government agencies, would verify that the border was secure.
My amendment was voted down 37-61 using a procedural vote, with seven Republicans joining Democrats to vote down the strongest border security amendment offered on the bill.
It is now up to the House to champion real immigration reform. If we're going to fix our broken borders and overhaul the system, the House will have to lead the way; the Senate version has simply failed to address our immigration problem with any competence.
Sen. Paul Presents Medal to George Hickey of Alvaton, KY
On Monday I had the privilege of presenting four military medals to Col. George Hickey (Ret.). These medals were earned by his father, Billy Hickey (now deceased), who was a veteran of the Korean War, a prisoner of war for nearly three years, and who served in both the United States Army and United States Air Force. Col. Hickey brought his wife and four grandchildren to the ceremony to share in this important remembrance of their great-grandfather and to learn more about our government by visiting my office. Reconnecting service members and their families with lost or previously unreceived medals is a small way of thanking them for the sacrifice that they - and countless other military families - have made for our country.

Sen. Paul Meets with Warren County Home School Students
On Monday morning, a group of Warren County home school students visited me at my Bowling Green office to learn more about our government. They have been learning about the Federal Government and the U. S. Constitution and wanted to see a little bit of the action - at least from the state office perspective.

Sen. Paul Reacts to President Obama's War on Coal
On Tuesday, President Obama gave a speech at Georgetown University in which he continued to assault the coal industry. When President Obama declares a war on coal, he declares a war on Kentucky jobs and our economy. Whether it is through the retroactive denial of permits, onerous regulations on coal-fired power plants, or unreasonable environmental requirements, the policies of this Administration are threatening the very way of life that has sustained Kentucky communities for generations.
As a defender of the free market and of coal, I will continue to fight back against the EPA and any other federal agency whose goal is to stifle coal production. I will continue to stand up for our miners in Washington as we continue to recognize the sacrifices they make to provide food for their families and energy for America.

Sen. Paul Speaks with the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber
On Wednesday, I met with the Cincinnati Regional Chamber delegation here in Washington. We discussed a variety of topics, including the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor, fair tax policies and legislation pertaing to small business regulations.

Senators Reject Department of Interior's Federal Hydraulic Fracturing Regulation with the Introduction of the FRESH Act
I, along with members of the Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW) reintroduced the Fracturing Regulations are Effective in State Hands (FRESH) Act of 2013. This legislation takes the control out of the hands of the federal bureaucrats in Washington, and hands it back to the states. Fracking continues to be an important issue to the state of Kentucky by creating well-paying jobs, lowering the prices of energy domestically and helping us reach the goal of being energy independent.

Sen. Paul Holds Bipartisan Press Conference Calling to Block Aid to Syria
On Thursday, I joined Reps. Walter Jones Jr. (R-N.C.), Chris Gibson (R-N.Y.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.) and Rick Nolan (D-Minn.) at a press conference calling to block all aid to Syria.
I have also introduced bipartisan legislation along with Sens. Tom Udall (D-N.M.), Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) that would prohibit the President from providing military aid to the Syrian rebels without Congressional consent.
The United States should never get involved where we have no clear national interest. We should not get involved militarily in a country like Syria, as it continues to become clear that intervention might work against our interests.

Media Wrap-Up

I also spoke with several radio stations across the country, as well as stations in Kentucky including Bill Cunningham of 700WLW, Lee Burke of East Kentucky Broadcasting, and Matt Walsh of WLAP. I also penned an Op-Ed's in the Washington Times, Politico, the Hill, and USA Today.
