They want a government option? Why not consolidate Medicare/Medicaid?

And make it premium-based (instead of everyone paying in) and accepting of all people with pre-existing conditions?

We already have a quasi-government option, why not reduce the bureaucracy and make it accessible to all?

This way, the Democrats get what they want, and the Republicans get what they want.

I think this is a great idea. Then we can start looking into other free market solutions to health care to reduce costs (make private health insurance purchasable across all state lines, make tax benefits for individuals equal to what companies get for health insurance, lift the ban on reimported prescription drugs, etc.)

What are your thoughts?

The Democrats have been repeating over and over that the public "option" will give consumers more choices. If that's true, why stop there? Why not have a dozen public options, and let the people decide on tax day which one gets their tax dollars?

The thing is, they're trying to tap the healthy.

The unhealthy are overwhelmingly the ones who want the service, for some reason. All the stubbornly healthy people who refuse to play are the ones they need to subsidize both treatment for the unhealthy and the overhead (including the bribes and kickbacks). So, they want to use force to get people who don't need or want it paying for it. That's what this is all about, not a real crying need.

I'd rather abolish Medicare/Medicaid. Even though I see what you're saying, even that would lead to incrementally socializing medicine. I want the feds out of it. Read this, by a doctor who takes Medicaid: http://www.americanthinker.com/2009/08/obamacare_and_me.html

I completely agree, but we can only there inch by inch, progress is incremental as they say; and I think this idea of consolidation and reform of payment and collection method would be a way to get there.

There's such a small number of people that aren't insured that don't qualify for medicaid...I've always wondered why we don't just expand medicaid. Maybe we could rout a few billion from the trillions we've sent to wallstreet to do it?

Obama-bots never have an answer to this.
