Exactly right. Otherwise, when he ran on the LP ticket in 2012, he would have gotten more than just less-than-a-third of what he got when he ran on the LP ticket (again) in 2016.
After all. he was just as much a "successful former governor" in 2012 as he was in 2016, he had all the same "actual political leadership experience" in 2012 as he did in 2016, and he was just as name-recognizable in 2012 as he was in 2016 (and probably more so, since he had run in the 2012 Republican primaries and was in two of the debates).
The only reason Johnson did significantly better in 2016 than in 2012 is because Trump and Hillary were two of the most reviled and disliked candidates to ever simultaneously run for POTUS on opposing major party tickets. Combine that with the fact that the Libertarian Party was the only other party whose candidate was on the ballot in all 50 states, and it's not at all difficult to understand that Johnson only got as many votes as he did in 2016 merely because he wasn't Trump or Hillary.

Johnson didn't get double digits in a single state
A mormon did well in Utah? Impossible.

By some strange coincidence, the Green Party ticket also received more than 3 times as many votes in 2016 as they did in 2012.

It would be enlightening to have a poll of average Americans. Either by showing a picture, and asking “do you know who this is”, or just asking “have you heard of Gary Johnson”. Maybe 1%? I can only think of one person I know in real life that could answer that question, and that’s because she has to hear about politics all the time...

Nah, that was obviously just a completely unrelated fluke.
The LP had two ex-governors on their 2016 ticket. (Let's not forget Bill Weld, after all. Even more gravitas!)
The Greens didn't have any ex-governors on theirs. And unlike the LP, they weren't even on the ballot in all fifty states.

Not sure how that would matter. If you want to know what the left thinks of Ron Paul just go read some comments on his facebook page whenever he releases a new episode of the Liberty Report.
Pretty sure they think of Dr. Paul as 'alt right' simply based on the criteria that The Texan pointed out, 'anyone who is not a flaming liberal is far-right'.

The people in every party often have much better ideas than those who hold power.
However, this tends to use Group Psychology so that the members of any group adopt the ideas of the leaders. And as far as I am concerned, Libertarian and Alt Right are incompatible, unless of course, just like both the Republican and Democrat parties, the Leadership has been co-opted.
They always do everything they can to make meaningful opposition work for them instead of against them.

The actual policy of Libertarian is Non-Interference. We dont need to blow mountains of money if we simply leave them alone UNLESS they are at our doorstep to wage war.
