Washington (CNN) — Ted Cruz plans to back Donald Trump for the presidency as early as Friday, according to multiple sources familiar with the Texas senator's decision, a stunning turn of events after a contentious primary filled with nasty personal attacks and a dramatic snub at the Republican National Convention.

The exact nature of the announcement isn't yet clear.

Trump has moved closer to Cruz in recent weeks, hiring key allies such as Kellyanne Conway as his campaign manager, and Jason Miller as a spokesman.

Cruz met recently with Trump's vice presidential nominee Mike Pence, the ticket's bridge to the conservative base. On Wednesday, Trump's campaign expressed support for a Cruz-backed, Internet-related proposal in government funding talks in the Senate. And Friday, Trump released a new list of conservative judges likely to appeal to the former Supreme Court clerk -- including perhaps Cruz's closest friend in Congress, Utah Sen. Mike Lee.

The two men clashed repeatedly during the primaries, as Trump taunted the senator with the nickname "Lyin' Ted," suggested Cruz wasn't eligible to be president due to his Canadian birthplace, and even speculated that Cruz's father was involved in the JFK assassination.

On his last day of the GOP campaign -- the Indiana primary in early May -- Cruz let loose against Trump, calling the businessman a "serial philanderer," "utterly amoral," and "a narcissist at a level I don't think this country's ever seen.

Radio host Steve Deace also told CNN he believed the announcement was imminent

"I believe he will release an op-ed today, basing it on the fact he has Pence's assurances on judges," Deace said.

In recent days, Cruz has declined to say if he would endorse Trump, but continued to say Hillary Clinton should not be elected.

"My focus is on defeating Hillary Clinton and helping preserve a Senate Republican majority," Cruz told CNN's Manu Raju Tuesday. "Because we need a federal government that is devoted to defending the Constitution, to defeating radical Islamic terrorism and keeping this country safe."

Asked if that meant he could endorse Trump before November, Cruz added: "I've given you my answer."

Yeah.... that's a real genuine endorsement lmao

In other news.... Glenn Beck is now on suicide watch following Cruz's decision.

From Ted's FB Page:

This election is unlike any other in our nation’s history. Like many other voters, I have struggled to determine the right course of action in this general election.

In Cleveland, I urged voters, “please, don’t stay home in November. Stand, and speak, and vote your conscience, vote for candidates up and down the ticket whom you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution.”

After many months of careful consideration, of prayer and searching my own conscience, I have decided that on Election Day, I will vote for the Republican nominee, Donald Trump.

I’ve made this decision for two reasons. First, last year, I promised to support the Republican nominee. And I intend to keep my word.

Second, even though I have had areas of significant disagreement with our nominee, by any measure Hillary Clinton is wholly unacceptable — that’s why I have always been #NeverHillary.

Six key policy differences inform my decision. First, and most important, the Supreme Court. For anyone concerned about the Bill of Rights — free speech, religious liberty, the Second Amendment — the Court hangs in the balance. I have spent my professional career fighting before the Court to defend the Constitution. We are only one justice away from losing our most basic rights, and the next president will appoint as many as four new justices. We know, without a doubt, that every Clinton appointee would be a left-wing ideologue. Trump, in contrast, has promised to appoint justices “in the mold of Scalia.”

For some time, I have been seeking greater specificity on this issue, and today the Trump campaign provided that, releasing a very strong list of potential Supreme Court nominees — including Sen. Mike Lee, who would make an extraordinary justice — and making an explicit commitment to nominate only from that list. This commitment matters, and it provides a serious reason for voters to choose to support Trump.

Second, Obamacare. The failed healthcare law is hurting millions of Americans. If Republicans hold Congress, leadership has committed to passing legislation repealing Obamacare. Clinton, we know beyond a shadow of doubt, would veto that legislation. Trump has said he would sign it.

Third, energy. Clinton would continue the Obama administration’s war on coal and relentless efforts to crush the oil and gas industry. Trump has said he will reduce regulations and allow the blossoming American energy renaissance to create millions of new high-paying jobs.

Fourth, immigration. Clinton would continue and even expand President Obama’s lawless executive amnesty. Trump has promised that he would revoke those illegal executive orders.

Fifth, national security. Clinton would continue the Obama administration’s willful blindness to radical Islamic terrorism. She would continue importing Middle Eastern refugees whom the FBI cannot vet to make sure they are not terrorists. Trump has promised to stop the deluge of unvetted refugees.

Sixth, Internet freedom. Clinton supports Obama’s plan to hand over control of the Internet to an international community of stakeholders, including Russia, China, and Iran. Just this week, Trump came out strongly against that plan, and in support of free speech online.

These are six vital issues where the candidates’ positions present a clear choice for the American people.

If Clinton wins, we know — with 100% certainty — that she would deliver on her left-wing promises, with devastating results for our country.

My conscience tells me I must do whatever I can to stop that.

We also have seen, over the past few weeks and months, a Trump campaign focusing more and more on freedom — including emphasizing school choice and the power of economic growth to lift African-Americans and Hispanics to prosperity.

Finally, after eight years of a lawless Obama administration, targeting and persecuting those disfavored by the administration, fidelity to the rule of law has never been more important.

The Supreme Court will be critical in preserving the rule of law. And, if the next administration fails to honor the Constitution and Bill of Rights, then I hope that Republicans and Democrats will stand united in protecting our fundamental liberties.

Our country is in crisis. Hillary Clinton is manifestly unfit to be president, and her policies would harm millions of Americans. And Donald Trump is the only thing standing in her way.

A year ago, I pledged to endorse the Republican nominee, and I am honoring that commitment. And if you don’t want to see a Hillary Clinton presidency, I encourage you to vote for him.

Pretty stupid move. I actually had some respect for Cruz for at least having some principle. Now not only is he disloyal, he's unprincipled. He already made his position as a "When Trump loses to Clinton, I can say I Told You So!".... now he's lost all currency and all chips. Makes no sense.

His supporters came over to Trump in droves in September. He has no choice.

You had respect for him for breaking his word? He promised to support the nominee. You can't promise to do something and then refuse to do it because of "principles". Anyways, he's only doing it to save his political career.

didn't Priebus say those that signed the 'pledge' and didn't support the nominee will not be allowed to run as republicans?...

Awesome. Teddy couldn't take it. This is great news.

So he burned his rep with the Trump crowd AND his own backers that thought he had any principles. lol. Maybe now, he'll get his talk show on christian radio and get out of Rand's way.

He pretty much did max damage.

Cruz was Trump's best friend up until the Iowa Caucus. He then completely flipped once the voting got underway. He broke his pledge. He alienated a lot of people at the Convention but fortified himself with people who thought he was some true conservative. Then he alienated the last group and will still get no support from the rest of the party.

The correct answer was I took a pledge. I support the nominee because I am honoring my pledge and because I used the party apparatus to get elected. And now I will never talk of this race again.

its simple political calculation, IE devoid of principled values, like a chameleon. The polls tightened up especially in the battleground states and Trump has a clear path to win the election now.

Of course you don't do an endorsement like that without some guarantees. Lyin' Ted at it again.

Really makes his convention snub look even dumber. I give him a shred of credit for upholding his pledge like Rand did. Now the #NeverTrumpers only have company in Jebby and egomaniac Kasich.

He must have heard the rumors that Trumpster will be next POTUS in the aftermath of overheating controversy.

Cruz’s campaign manager: He’s impressed with Trump’s new discipline and thinks about endorsing every day

Signs like this Cruzer shift and recent bubbling furstrations that caused SWC Obama's insult-gate scandal point to an almost certain impending hostile takeover of WH by Trumpster and his supporters.
