In contrast, Biden few days ago had pledged "no new lockdowns" in US.
Exercise caution, report is from a very MSM outlet NYT that was called "a true ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!” by a recent GOP POTUS:

Sydney, Australia, enters full lockdown for the first time in the pandemic to fight the Delta variant.

Sydney, Australia, Is Placed Under Full Lockdown to Curb Outbreak

With an outbreak of the Delta variant spreading rapidly, Australian officials on Saturday introduced a strict two-week lockdown for all of greater Sydney and the regions surrounding the nation’s largest city.
The first full-city lockdown for Sydney since early 2020 reflects a sudden rise in concern among officials in the state of New South Wales, who had been hoping that contact tracers and targeted isolation would be enough to keep the more contagious variant under control.
Instead, after initially resisting a full lockdown, officials said on Saturday that strict citywide stay-home orders were necessary because they had found several additional chains of transmission around the city among people who had been infectious for days.
The virus, said New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian, was simply moving too quickly through the population. Over the past 10 days, a cluster that began with an airport limousine driver in Sydney, a city of five million, has jumped to nearly 100 cases, with dozens more expected over the coming days.
“We don’t want to impose burdens unless we absolutely have to, Ms. Berejiklian told a news conference on Saturday. “Unfortunately, we have to.”
She said that a shorter lockdown would not be enough to regain control over transmission, describing the Delta variant as spreading far faster than other strains of the coronavirus.

How does this make any sense whatsoever? They didn't do full lockdowns for this whole thing and did fine. They're going to surrender to this insanity now? Australia never had many "cases", but New South Wales did better than Victoria for the whole thing.

Sounds like they never developed any herd immunity. That’s the downside to isolating and avoiding infections. Unless the virus goes extinct, it’s going to get them eventually.

Couldn't be because the regional government's emergency authorization was set to expire today.......naaaa, that's crazy talk. Must be because of a pesky new variant. Yeah that's the ticket. A variant forcing the extension of the emergency powers. We all know that governments never cling with white knuckles to new powers they granted themselves, right? ;)

The Omega variant can't get here fast enough, in my opinion.

Saw some news citing a newer "delta plus variant".

Yes, even a virus must be PC.
Although it seems like this variant still mainly gets called the Delta variant, it is interesting to observe that it also gets called the India variant, and there doesn't appear to be any moratorium in the media of attaching a geographic descriptor to it that way, like there is for such terms as the China Virus or the Wuhan Virus.
It’s because Biden and his bubble-headed bimbo sidekick are racist xenophobic fascists...

There seems to be evolution in nomenclature used for this variant. Apparently because its original name "B.1.617.2 variant" was difficult to remember, news media started calling it "India variant" early on. Recently a simpler new name "Delta variant" was devised, part of it could be for PC reasons too and most MSM news tend to use that now.
While looking up this variant's naming history, came across some other news reports that seem to reinforce covid-travel restrictions/race related aspects that IM & B4L alluded to.

Australia's India ban criticised as 'racist' rights breach
3 May
Australia has imposed a temporary ban on citizens in India returning homeAustralia's threat to jail citizens returning home from India has sparked condemnation, with critics labelling the Covid measure as "racist" and a breach of human rights.

From Monday, any Australian arriving in the country from India faces fines and up to five years in prison.
It comes after Canberra banned all flights from the virus hotspot until 15 May.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has dismissed accusations of racism.

In contrast, travel ban that Biden announced recently following reports of this variant's spread were not that restrictive.

ASIAN COUNTRIES TIGHTEN RESTRICTIONS

Countries in Asia, many of which avoided the worst outcomes that hit Western nations in 2020, have been particularly hard hit in recent weeks by the spread of Delta, first detected in India. Australia, Japan and the Philippines were among countries to announce tighter COVID-19 restrictions on Friday

We know from the research that it (Delta) has a viral load 1,000 times higher than previous variants, that’s why we see more cases because it transmits more easily and faster,” Dicky Budiman, an epidemiologist from Griffith University in Australia’s Queensland state, told Reuters.

He said Delta appears to cause more severe symptoms, especially regarding breathing difficulties.
Australia, which had previously kept infection under control but has been far slower than other rich countries to vaccinate the public, has been imposing lockdowns. From Monday, army personnel will help police its biggest city Sydney, checking that people who have tested positive are isolating.

The Philippines announced a plan to put the Manila capital region, home to more than 13 million people, in lockdown for two weeks.
India reported its highest number of daily cases in three weeks.
In Japan, where a surge in cases has overshadowed the Olympic Games, the government proposed states of emergency through the end of August in three prefectures near Tokyo and the western prefecture of Osaka.
“Infections are broadening. The situation is extremely severe,” Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura said, warning infections had not yet reached a peak.
Vietnam, which has fully vaccinated less than 1% of its 96 million people, is mobilising private hospitals to take COVID-19 patients. After successfully containing the virus for much of the pandemic, it has been facing record daily increases in infections since late April.

Australia's daily COVID-19 cases near 2,000 as Delta gains ground

  • Australia logs biggest daily pandemic caseload
  • NSW cases expected to peak next week
  • Victoria daily cases record year's biggest rise

SYDNEY, Sept 10 (Reuters) - Australia's COVID-19 daily cases topped 1,900 for the first time in the pandemic on Friday as an outbreak fuelled by the highly infectious Delta variant continued to gain ground in locked-down Sydney and Melbourne, its largest cities.
Australia is in the grip of a third wave of infections with the Delta outbreak forcing officials to ditch their COVID-zero strategy in favour of suppressing the virus.
They now aim to begin easing tough restrictions after reaching a higher proportion of the population with double-dose vaccinations.
New South Wales (NSW), the epicentre of the country's worst outbreak, reported 1,542 new daily local cases, topping the previous high of 1,533 hit last week. Nine new deaths were registered.
"So far this trajectory is what has been predicted," NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian told a media briefing in Sydney, the state capital, where cases are expected to hit a peak in the next week.
Berejiklian said the daily COVID-19 media briefing would be scrapped from Monday and updates would be detailed in an online video, an approach previously used when case numbers were low.

Oh, look. 0.02% of the population comes down with a cold every day, and during some indeterminate period if time, 0.0013% of the population has died, ostensibly of it.

The horror!
