... I have changed my plans, and have decided that my next device for auto-protection will be a handheld one.

More specifically, this Glock.

Which means, 2 years after becoming a 2nd Amendment citizen (with a .357 Taurus wheelgun), I now go the route of semiautomatic pistols.

Does anybody here own this piece of Austrian engineering? What are your thoughts, recommendations, suggestions, and warnings?

A friend of mine owns it. I've used it. It fits well into my hand. He also recommended it as the Glock pistols are easy to disassemble, which makes cleaning brief and quick. Furthermore, I also looked at other pistol brands (including the Taurus, which has a rich line of pistols), but I'm opting for a Glock and not for a Taurus because the Glock brand has a long reputation of extreme quality management (they fire thousands of rounds per pistols and if a given piece jams a number of times, it's discarded)... and because the Taurus pistols, while within my budget, jam a lot more often (so said the reviews I read).

my brother has a Glock SF21. I shot it this weekend, pretty solid piece. Feels good to shoot, although it's a little bulky and I don't know that i'd get one for an everyday carry piece as it's a little bulky and heavy.

I guess it really depends on what you want it for.

i daily carry a G19. about the best engineered pistols one can get for the price, outside of 400$ 1911s. easy to take apart and clean.

mine has an extended slide release lever, 100$ night sights, and exceptional trigger work that makes the action smoother and lighter than factory. this is a must imo for any glock.

No experience with a Glock of that caliber.

I have had the pleasure of shooting the G35, Glock's slicked up .40. Took my mandated 'infringement course' with that one. Nice handling piece for paper targets. Very forgiving.

While pretty slick, I couldn't justify the G35 for what our needs were.

We went with a GenIII G22 (.4o) with the Trijicon night sights, and run a Blackhawk CQC holster. I would've liked to have tried the Gen4 grip option, but I've gotten used to the the III's feel and am content with the hold I get. Would like to get a rail light for it in the near future.

If I had the time and money I could shoot the G22 all day long. As mentioned, cleaning is real a joy as well -easy peasy. For me it's a very comfortable gun/caliber.

The friends and family men/women 2nd amendments newbs that I have shared my very limited knowledge and training with have all found our G22 to be an easy gun and round to handle. Take a friend shooting!:)

I would like to get a G19 or G17 as well. I would certainly entertain buying any used Glock after a testing session.

I've had limited, but good experiences with Glock, my sister and brother in law have had considerably more experience and that has been good as well.

They're the ones who turned me onto Glock. Glocks -I like 'em.

Be safe!

Glocks are awesome, and is my choice for a pistol. I have a G19 and a G23. Can't go wrong.

If the grip angle fits you well, there's no going wrong with a Glock. This is coming from someone who is no fan of Glocks either.

I used to daily carry a G19. Have nothing but good things to say for the weapon. Very accurate. Easy to carry. Easy to clean.

Lately however, I've been carrying a LCP, mostly because I'm very lazy. Still carry G19 sometimes.

Here's a pic of my Glock 19. I bought a Pelican 1495 Computer Case on Amazon meant for a 17" laptop & carved out the foam insert to my liking. Also, I'm a first time gun owner & I've been using 115 grain MagTech 9mm ammo exclusively with my Glock. I've put about 1,500 rounds through it with no problems. I found a website online called bulkammo.com that sells it in bulk packs of 1,000 rounds at crazy cheap prices (currently it's on sale for $209).

I would go with the shotgun.....

Okay, I seriously Lol'd at that one. Well played, indeed.

Me? I would get a handgun, shotgun and long rifle before doubling up on any one tool. The .357 wheelgun is a great personal protection handgun. Next, I'd go with the Remington 870 or Mossberg 500; both are tried and true and have the best aftermarket for parts and upgrades. After that, it's reach out and touch someone time, with a .308 or 30-06. Then...Then it's time to have fun and get more toys!

But back on topic; Glocks are great and are built very well. You really can't go wrong with one. I think you made the right decision since you've used it and it fits your hands well, and you're comfortable with it. Good pick up and hope you ge tmany good years with it!

I also agree that a well-rounded defense system is best. A good pistol, rifle, and shotgun will cover all of your bases. Now about the Glock, I have the model 20 in 10mm and she is very nice!

Mine:

Glock 30

Winchester 1300
Mossberg Maverick 88

Marlin 60
Marlin 795
Ruger 10/22

AK Saiga (7.62 x 39)

Mosin Nagant for pesky deer or bad guys seven counties over.

I have a g36 which is the slimline single stack 45. It's pretty tight

Same here, but it's finicky on ammo and always has extraction issues. Some people have no issues; not me. Hence I carry a 1911.

I don't care for squishy Glock triggers anyway. Once I tried a 1911, there was no going back.

G19 with an MTAC Comp-Tac holster works quite nicely. I tried several other well known holsters, but that's my favorite combo.

A word of warning about newer Glocks! Many 4th-Generation and later 3rd Generation Glocks suffer from erratic ejection that will often cause empty cases to be ejected at your head -- an obvious annoyance that could be a liability in a self-defense situation. This has become a fairly well-known problem. One of my own Glocks (a later Gen 3 G17) suffers from it. Glock does not appear to know how to solve the problem; many people have sent their guns back to Glock only to have them returned with a note saying they've been upgraded and tested, yet with the problem remaining nonetheless. Here's a thread on the issue:

Fortunately, a custom manufacturer called Apex Tactical stepped up to the plate and is now making an extractor specifically to solve this problem. The first production batch actually goes on sale today (9/25), with more to follow in about a month:

I'm going to get one myself; hopefully it will do the trick. If so, then I'll be able to recommend Glocks again. For the time being, I'd avoid them.

If you decide not to get a Glock but still want a handgun, I'd get either an HK or a Walther. The Walther PPQ has been getting rave reviews, and HK has a stellar reputation as well.

I'd get an M&P before a Glock.

There's various other guns for consideration too, of course.

I have a G30 and a G19, and would love to get a G21 SF, as well. I love my Glocks, but would recommend a Smith and Wesson or an XD just as readily.

Once I tried a 1911, there was no going back.

John Browning knew what he was doing. Along with the Mauser action, still in service as designed over 100 years later because a better solution is yet to prove itself.
