School nurse all but calls me a murderer for refusing to vaccinate my daughters

Saturday, February 09, 2013 by: Mike Bundrant

"I am a public health of official," the nurse said with authority as she pointed to the hokey-looking certificate on the wall. "So it is my duty to inform you of the risks you are taking by refusing to vaccinate your children."

My twin daughters go to public middle school and I do refuse to vaccinate them. In California this year, there is a mandatory whooping cough vaccination of seventh graders. Even though a child may have received the "Tdap" vaccine earlier in life, the new claim is that it is "wearing off." So, they need to take it again.

At any rate, the school nurse laid into me for refusing. Here is my summary of how the conversation continued:
I said, "Well, I am just here to sign the waiver so they can attend school."

She replied, "Yes, of course, and you are allowed to do that, but I need to explain the risks you are taking. Why aren't you willing to have your children vaccinated?"

"I am against vaccines."

"Yes, but I see they were vaccinated earlier in life. Most parents don't change their minds like this."

"I've learned a lot more about vaccines since then."

I am nervous and don't trust this person. I want to hold my ground and stand for something, but do not want to become confrontational. My kids need to attend school here. This is an unfortunate position to be in.

"Okay," she condescended. "But you need to be aware of the dangers before you sign the waiver. If there is an outbreak of whooping cough this year, your kids won't be able to come to school. Further, you need to understand that children have been known to die because of this illness, so it is important that we take the necessary precautions."

I hold my ground. "I do not believe vaccines are the best precautions to take."

As I left I wondered if I was just paranoid. Am I really neglectful for not vaccinating my children according to the government's protocol? Wait...did she just call me a murderous parent? Did she subtly blame me and people like me for the existence of illness in schools?

Even though nothing she could have said would have changed my mind, I still left her office feeling like a schmuck. It took a few minutes to get over it and move on. Is that what they intend? Of course.

Have any public officials harassed you?

I don't think the doctors who found problems with vaccines refuses them. Instead he wants a new time table for them and he doesn't want then mixed.

We dealt with this last year when our first son was born. After months of research, I decided against the Vitamin K shot, antibacterial eye ointment, and the Hep-B vaccine for our newborn. My wife and I are monogamous and she was tested previously for gonorrhea, chlamydia, hepatitis-b, etc. Our baby was also to be estimated about 9 lbs (10 lbs 3oz at birth) so not exactly the same risks that would exist with a premature birth.

Apparently they don't get a lot of refusals at Naval Hospitals and I had to sign a "refusal of treatment" after talking with half a dozen nurses and doctors. But we stood our ground. The pediatrician then refused to circumcise our son because he was concerned about how his blood would clot without the Vitamin K shot, even though they had no reservations conducting the PKU "heel stick: test in which his blood clotted up just fine. He told us to come back in few months.
Well, during the next few months I ended up researching circumcision, and opted against that as well. Just watch a video of that procedure online.... I couldn't justify doing something like that to our son in the name of vanity for almost purely cosmetic reasons.

That same pediatrician brought my wife to tears weeks later at the well-baby checkup after basically saying we would be killing our son without vaccinating him.
We stood our ground though.

We've continued to not vaccinate our son this year after more research, although with much apprehension. I addressed each vaccine individually, doing a cost-benefit analysis of each one and weighing the likeliness he would get the disease (being breast-fed and stay-at-home),the severity the disease and possible complications against the risk of an adverse reaction to the vaccine. Each time, so far, the vaccines have failed to meet my standards. So as of 12 1/2 months, our baby boy is in the 90+% for height and 70+% for weight (which is normal for leaner breastfed babies) and is 2-6 months ahead in almost every developmental milestone. He has only had minor illnesses. Other parents are amazed at his good temperament (which is beginning to change as we enter the toddler stage).

I sense the tide is shifting against the "Vaccinate everyone for everything" pharmaceutical/
CDC/AAP/ACIP lobby. Parents are starting to educate themselves, weigh the risks, and make their own decisions which is as it should be because only you and your family will have to answer for these decisions.

We had to make some heavy sacrifices to homeschool but I never regret it. This article points out just one of many many reasons why.

+Rep! We need more people like you and your wife! God Bless!

Whooping cough has been epidemic in California High Schools in past years. They are giving everyone the new TDaP vaccine. It's a brutal vaccine. Your entire arm will be in pain for several days after getting it. Better than getting whooping cough though. That's miserable for 3 months.

While I agree that this is one I personally think is "worth it" in the long line of vaccines, I also respect others' choice not to get it. The fact that the earlier version of the shot that kids got already has now worn off should send up red flags as to the problem: too many things introduced into a developing body. Vaccines for everything, birth control pills at an earlier age, behavior modifying drugs, OTC pain and cough and cold medicines for every little symptom, and so on... I think that it's a cumulative thing, and there's just no telling how an individual is going to react to the sum of all of this foreign stuff added to the body's natural chemicals.

Glad my son is home schooled now. Quite a few people have died from those government-backed vaccines. Not surprised those public school nurses are rude as many of them have that follow-everyone-else mentality.

I remember years ago my chiropractor telling me that he had to jump hoops in order for his children to attend school because he didn't want them vaccinated. He had to say it was for religious reasons. This was even before the increase in the amout of vaccinations they want children to have. If a professional chiropractor refused in order to keep his children safe, you know you did the right thing.

Yeah, the number of drugs and vaccinations is staggering. Best to avoid most of them, especially too many vaccines all at once. But everyone should have the Tetanus vaccine, so TDaP is probably still on the list.

Whooping cough and tetanus are bacterial, and those vaccines have always worn off much faster than viral vaccines. Booster required every ten years.

DTAP for pertussis was one of those we really struggled with our decision, especially living overseas. From my research the old vaccine (DTP) was notorious for causing neurological reactions and brain injury. Current vaccine (DTAP) is better tolerated but still contains larger amounts of chemicals than other vaccines. One issue I have is the combining of these vaccines. Even if I wanted to vaccinate for pertussis, it would be difficult to find a pertussis-only vaccine. I was not worried about diphtheria since it is extremely rare. No US cases have been reported since 2003 and it is treatable. Tetanus is rare and unlikely to be acquired unless through a deep wound that is not washed or disinfected. Virtually all cases are in adults. TIG shot can be administered if infected. Our baby was not likely to encounter this. Pertussis is common but rarely fatal in infants older than 3 months old. Vaccination is only 85-90% effective against one strain and the new strains are not covered. It is also treatable. We ended up passing on this one.

You are dead-on about the cumulative effect. Studies of some vaccines and the combined effects of the AAP/CDC/ACIP/WHO recommended schedule are limited in the study size or length or have not been conducted. However, there is substantial evidence to suggest the US vaccination program, as one part of an increasingly toxic environment, has resulted in a drastic increase in disorders including allergies, asthma, ADD/ADHD, autism, and SIDS.

Because the TOTAL effect of the current aggressive vaccination schedule is unknown or likely to be accurately reported, it can only be assumed that the total risk of harmful effects of an aggressive vaccination program are of the same order of magnitude as the risks the diseases present themselves, and therefore not preferable to parents practicing a selective vaccination schedule unique to the risk factors their child is likely to encounter.

The pressure to adhere to the CDC/AAP/ACIP standards should be ignored due to the collusion between these organizations, the government, and the pharmaceutical companies that often fund the research and researchers. They are also motivated by the large-scale epidemiological benefits of a widespread vaccination program and not the costs and risks to the individual. Individuals suffer when forced to undergo unnecessary immunizations and the associated risks, particularly if their unique situation is absent of risk factors for contracting rare and extremely rare diseases.

You are the equivalent of a heretic in her eyes. The violent tendency of this person to have you viewed and prosecuted as a murder shows the severity of her religious fervor. She will be a most obedient order follower when the time comes to "shoot" everyone.

I'm sure there was a time when this person resembled a free market nurse, voluntarily promoting her goods and services, but thanks to the power of the ring she has turned Orc. (Sorry just started watching LOTR - again- with my little girl..lol)

Tetanus is like staph. It's everywhere. Kids step on nails or other sharp objects (at least they used to). Whooping cough is only treatable if antibiotics are started before symptoms start.

It would be nice if they had separate vaccines, but tetanus and whooping cough are a couple that are worth it.

Public school teacher called CPS on us for refusing to put our son on psychiatric medications which even his specialist said would do no good. They had the medical records that said this and they even threatened us before they called by saying if we did not give in and put him on medication that would make their job easier than they would call and report us for medical neglect. Needless to say, our children are now homeschooled though CPS has shown up to investigate us for that as well saying they were concerned about the kids not being in school (idiots could have called the board of ed before even showing up and found out they were homeschooled). I know this is not a vaccination story but the father here who said his Wife was driven to tears should take special precaution because these "professionals" are likely to call CPS. If they do not than someone from a public school will.

I have a toddler that is a free bleeder...
we're in the ER a few times a month with some form of bleed... usually internal.
Every time we go we get the vaccine run down...

before they stop my son's bleeding.

The other one that drives me absolutely batshit crazy:

While my kid is bleeding...

before they do anything they ALWAYS ask,

"Are there any smokers in the home?"

I agree.

I'm not going to defend every vaccine, and I'm of the personal opinion that kids are getting too many vaccines for too many different things, and getting them way too early in some cases...

But as Brian says, tetanus is everywhere. I urge everyone to look up a description of someone dying of tetanus. Nasty stuff.

Personally, I figure if the odds are 1:100,000 of me being harmed by the vaccine and 1:2 of me dying if I skip the vaccine and contract tetanus, I'm going to take a chance on the vaccine.

In fact, I just got a tetanus booster about six months ago.... and I'm still alive!!! <shakes head> It's the damndest thing.....

Ask for a Tdap (Not DTaP). You get tetanus and pertussis without the diptheria. Call ahead because they won't have it on hand.

I think have your son watch out for taking aspirin. I've seen it thin the blood.

I'm not a doctor though.

I believe in a bunch of vaccines. But not the fad of the day one. Pharma has far too much power in getting their stuff approved imho. They are now recommending boys get the uterine cancer one, routinely, for example.

I used to step on nails from time to time as a child, rummaging through old boards or whatever to make stuff. I got so used to it, that once I stepped on a roofing nail and didn't know it, until I stepped up on a sidewalk and felt/heard a clicking. I thought I had a bottle cap stuck to the bottom of my foot, but after looking I had to pull the dang thing out.
I'm not sure whether I ever had a tetanus shot or not back then, since my parents didn't believe in getting shots or using doctors.
