"It would be reasonable for Russia to lay claim to Alaska; it was part of the Russian Empire for a long time." A framed satellite image of the Bering Strait that separates Alaska from Russia like a thread hangs from his office wall. "It's not there for no reason," he says with a sly grin.

Interest in his forecast revived this fall when he published an article in Izvestia, one of Russia's biggest national dailies. In it, he reiterated his theory, called U.S. foreign debt "a pyramid scheme," and predicted China and Russia would usurp Washington's role as a global financial regulator.

He predicts that economic, financial and demographic trends will provoke a political and social crisis in the U.S. When the going gets tough, he says, wealthier states will withhold funds from the federal government and effectively secede from the union. Social unrest up to and including a civil war will follow. The U.S. will then split along ethnic lines, and foreign powers will move in.

California will form the nucleus of what he calls "The Californian Republic," and will be part of China or under Chinese influence. Texas will be the heart of "The Texas Republic," a cluster of states that will go to Mexico or fall under Mexican influence. Washington, D.C., and New York will be part of an "Atlantic America" that may join the European Union. Canada will grab a group of Northern states Prof. Panarin calls "The Central North American Republic." Hawaii, he suggests, will be a protectorate of Japan or China, and Alaska will be subsumed into Russia.

Lol.... We know liberty-as-a-goal has died if Texas falls to the Mexican government again.

"Mr. Panarin's résumé includes many years in the Soviet KGB"

Once KGB, ALWAYS KGB.

His mouth is in overdrive, but his brain's gears are stripped. If this nation ever splits, the Mississippi River will be a prominent feature, not a component of a little 'four corners' intersection of borders.

Smells like wishful thinking to me. Now we know what the remains of the KGB is daydreaming about these days...

The Russians may not know much about the US or US history. I doubt the south could be split up along those lines.

It will be like the EU. States will form their own governments or smaller coalitions of states. We will be able to mint our own currencies. Welcome to the Coonass Republic of Louisiana! :p

Actually, that's just where I'd expect to find myself. There doesn't seem to be any demographic commonality between places like Louisiana, Texas, Colorado, Mormon country and Washington state on the surface, but I sense it. I full well expect the Louisiana Purchase territories would stick together.

Perfessor KGB here is proof a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. He has no feel for us at all. Like all numbers, his demographics lie and he doesn't know enough to sense the problem. His map is textbook simple and dead wrong.

Hope those other psychos up in their ivory towers in Langley, Va. are fooling themselves just as hard right now. Bastards.

That map sucks.

agreed

Texas wont be a part of mexico. I doubt the reverse would happen either

Northern states to Canada? ok, east coast to Europe - they can have them. Carolinas and VA/WVA would go south. Midwest would cut to include KS, MO, NE and become a powerhouse in food production

States HAVE their own governments -- with Weenie Governors. I don't know why the hell those governors bother to convene if they are afraid to seize the reins of their own states . . . unless it is for the Free Travel.

American Officialdom is VERY big on Free Travel. Who wouldn't be? Travel is expensive.

I have to ask myself, if the "Great State of California" cannot handle its own holiday traffic and must call in the UNITED STATES MARINES to assist -- not least because California's National Guard has been doing duty in Iraq -- who would we send to defend Alaska should the Russians take it into their helmets to invade, and how long would it take to get them there?

Or are we sitting tight, on confidence that Sarah Palin has got the situation in hand?

Us, American citizens would go. Our country may have a lot of problems but I'll be damned if I sit by idly while a foreign nation lays claim to our lands. Adopt a Fabian strategy and avoid getting into a direct confrontation hit and run. As long as your army intact you drain your opponents energy, resources and their willingness to fight. The Russians would probably be able to get into Alaska very quickly, but I guarantee that would result in all out "nucular" (hehe thanks bush) warfare.

I am DELIGHTED to hear it -- I am despondent over how many of my countrymen are turning out to be frauds and cowards.

Coupla problems, however.

Who will protect your property from Looters at home? Who will protect your family? What will you do for money? What happens if Canada declares Neutrality, and declines to cooperate with the trucking in of machinery and supplies -- blow them away, en route? Too, I believe it is not uncommon for combatants to gain and lose ground, yes? When/as Russia is pushed back, they are pushed into their own country. If you must pull back to re-group, again, you must deal with Canada.

And dress warm. Kid yourself not about the number of campaigns that have been abandoned or lost owing to brutal winters.
