Russia Claims Capitol Rioters Face ‘Persecution’ In U.S.

After President Joe Biden said he would press Russian President Vladimir Putin on human rights at an upcoming summit, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov responded by accusing the U.S. of the “persecution” of Trump supporters who attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6.

Key Facts

Lavrov said during a press conference on Monday Russia is “ready to talk” and there will be “no taboo topics” at the summit between the two leaders, which is slated for June 16.

Lavrov said that includes human rights, but quickly turned the tables, stating Russia is “following with interest” the “persecution” of those “accused of the riots on Jan. 6.”

Casting the DOJ’s efforts to prosecute the rioters and the imprisonment of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and his supporters as roughly equivalent, Lavrov chalked up the Jan. 6 issue to “the rights of the opposition and protecting those rights.”

Biden said during a Memorial Day speech on Sunday that he will make clear to Putin the U.S. “will not stand by” and let him “abuse” the human rights of his people.

Lavrov’s comments strike a similar note to defenses of the rioters made by some House Republicans, such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who alleged in a floor speech they are being “abused” in federal detention.

Forbes has reached out to the Justice Department and White House for comment.

This is pretty close to a resignation from Trump. Time to start looking seriously for a 2020 presidential candidate, IMO. Even if he's not leaving now, he will be after his present term is finished. He's done, stick a fork in 'em!

Granted your 2020 prediction came true, those were some strong words.
