Ron Paul to run in 2012?

Last week, Campaign for Liberty press guy and Ron Paul grandson-in-law Jesse Benton was driving to a constituent event with his boss and the subject of 2012 came up.

"He hasn’t closed out the idea of another run," said Benton today. "We have some time to decide whether he runs again, or whether he gets behind somebody else. But we don’t have tons of time. By the middle of 2009, the decision needs to be made."

Benton isn't pushing Paul one way or the other. "I could get behind either decision, but it needs to be made in the next six months or so," he said. "One thing we learned is that those voters in New Hampshire and Iowa expect, to see their candidates early and often." Paul entered the 2008 primaries in January 2007, about 11 months and two weeks before the Iowa caucuses.

I asked about the rumor that former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson might jump into the race (unclear in which party yet). "If he were to decide that he wanted to do that, he’d be a great guy to take the reins. But I don’t think that what Dr. Paul captured was 100 transferable to anyone else. I think the Bob Barr campaign assumed that and it didn't pan out."

Would Paul run as a Republican again or as a Libertarian? "We try not to ever deal in absolutes in politics," Benton said carefully. "But he would be very likely to be run as a Republican again." It's not just that "working within the system" gets more exposure for a candidate. It's that several Republican primary states include the caveat that candidates cannot run in their primaries and go third party if they lose. "To be frank, I got tired of the 'third party' question getting asked time after time, and I know that Ron did too."

Paul is almost exactly a year older than John McCain, and turned 73 years old in August.

Wow.
I'm pretty sure he won't run again, but I am surprised he hasn't written off the possibility!

The way I see it, and discounting my own wishes for Ron Paul to run again, I can't see anyone else besides him gaining much traction in another run.

He now has the name recognition

All of his "skeletons" have already been hashed out

He now has had practice and knows what to expect and what went wrong with this campaign and how to correct the mistakes

I see many neocons lamenting that they didn't support him when they had the chance

ALL his positions have been vindicated they will be even more so in 4 years

yes he will be older but not old, he is in great shape (much better than McCain is)

NO ONE can match his record, NO ONE

NO ONE can demonstrate absolute uncorrupted trustworthiness and he does, he has a record to back it up

There are few who understand the philosophy of liberty and the threats to it we face as he does

He will have a huge head start this time

He will have an army at his beckon call

He already has the organization infrastructure laid, the email/mailing list, the campaign for liberty, the precint leaders, the meetups, and this forum. This will be a HUGE advantage over anyone else.

This campaign has unveiled the enemies and allies so he will know who to trust and who to be suspicious of

He may not have to deal with the Iraq occupation stigmata in 2012, but if Obama still has us there at that time, EVERYONE will want out by then.

He was the only politician (I use the term loosely) that I or anyone I know was willing to donate money too, and many of us maxed out.

He now has "capital", he has political clout and a demonstrated propensity to raise funds

The media may not be able to totally drown him out this time

He didn't burn any bridges, yes he didn't endorse McCain but McCain was a false candidate and destined to lose.

This could be like Reagan's return after his initial defeat or even dare I say it, George Washington.

I want liberty in my lifetime GODDAMNIT

Ron Paul, I know even if you don't want to run again, your country needs you. We cannot survive another "well, so and so ran an interesting campaign, injected some ideas, and was endorsed by Ron Paul, but now that he has been soundly defeated, it's time to disregard everything that he and everyone who supported him stood for and continue on with the status quo." That is what would happen if we changed horses in mid-stream. You've got to give it one more shot, and we will work our tails off to make sure we are big enough between now and then to own it.

In your heart you know I'm right.

Yeah - That would be awesome if he ran again. The second best option would be Gary Johnson running with Ron Paul campaigning for him.

6 months from now is right around my B-day. Another run would be one awesome B-day gift.

He'd also have a lot more time to build up momentum, and hopefully he would spend a lot of time campaigning in those all-important early contests.

Lets hope he runs! If he does, we are more prepared than ever! We need to buy prime time TV spots, run high tide ads or similar....I'm ready more than ever to do this.

*hoping he runs again*

Next time, its going to be fucking war. Are you all ready for revenge or what? Let's own those fucking primaries.

By the way, this all depends on how well liked or disliked Obama is at the end of his first term.

Can we contact Ron or his people and let him know we want him in 2012?

And, can we please get someone different than Benton!

We are wiser now! If he runs again, we all need to be working within the Republican system. We need to become PCs and gain traction within the party. We'll need to be elected as National Delegates...etc.....

I would be so excited to work my ass off again, with some experience and knowledge to boot.

With all the shennanigans going on and how entrenched the blood suckers will be by 2012, I doubt they will risk ANY upsetting of their plans. I find it not a coincidence that we keep hearing of a Palin run, and other RINO's that will supposedly run to represent the 'new and improved' republican. But of course, they are framing the debate and creating the outcome years in advance. Another pawn.

I do not believe they will allow Ron Paul to make another stand. He will win and they know this. They will not allow that.

How unprofessional to whine to the media like this.... "To be frank, I got tired of the 'third party' question getting asked time after time,". I would expect nothing less of Jesse Benton.

Take your pick. He failed in a position of authority.

Anyway, Ron Paul 2012! - Benton + our knew knowledge & a beaten down GOP = Success!
