Ron Paul Surging in New Hampshire Following Top-Tier Finish in Iowa

New survey shows Paul with double the poll numbers of the third place candidate, solidifying Paul’s position as the ‘Anti-Romney’

Ron Paul is in second place in the key early voting state of New Hampshire with a remarkable 24% of the vote, according to a new Washington Times/Zogby Analytics Poll [crosstabs].

The poll, taken after the Iowa Caucuses, also shows Rick Santorum “leaping” to 11% (earning him a predictable Washington Times headline that ignores Paul’s surge), Newt Gingrich languishing at 9%, Jon Huntsman stagnating at 8% and Rick Perry barely registering at 1%.

“On the heels of his close third place finish at the Iowa Caucus, Ron Paul is polling a strong second place in New Hampshire. From here on out, it is a two-man race between Ron Paul and Mitt Romney given that one of the tickets out of Iowa was a dead-end due to Rick Santorum’s glaring lack of viability,” said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton.

“There are only two campaigns that have the resources and infrastructure to win the Republican nomination – and one of those organizations belongs to Ron Paul,” added Mr. Benton.

The poll of 498 likely primary voters has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points and ten percent undecided, showing Dr. Paul with the potential to catch and surpass Mitt Romney and win the Granite State.

I lot of people had hope for New Hampshire last time and McCain won there with Ron Paul in like 4th or 5th. I know Ron Paul will perform better than he did then, but I'm not setting myself up for the heartbreak again. Whatever free-thinking, independent spirit New Hampshire once had is, as far as I can tell, dead now.

I'm going all in on every hand. I don't care how many times the MSM will break my heart because that one victory will surely taste so sweet when you've built up such great anticipation. /quantum If we collectively win in the general consciousness before the first vote is tallied, than we have already won /quantum

Let's just keep doing what we are doing and hope for at least a strong second place finish.

I know what you're saying, but a problem with that is sometimes people get so deflated when it doesn't come to pass that they lose sight of the big picture and sort of carry the baggage of those defeats with them (I definitely was a part of that group last time) and everything looks negative from there. There's a ton of positive things that came from Dr. Paul getting in the top three and being so close to winning Iowa. I will feel the same way if he comes in a strong second in NH.

A strong second place in NH would be major. But I don't see the media allowing that to happen. I hope Ron then decides to skip SC and FL, and head out to states where he has a chance.

A second place finish would be excellent for the campaign. I can't, for the life of me, tell why Romney so strong in NH. Then again, I never understood why Romney was and is so accepted by the Republican party to begin with. We have to hold onto our second place position, and push higher to truly compete with Mitt. Huntsman and Santorum just don't have the ammunition to get much farther in the race, and I assume that Huntsman will be dropping out after the primary.

If Huntsman's media created surge only gets him to the low teens, he'll drop out right away. If he ends up in the twenties, I think he stays in a while.

Agreed with everything you said. People around here have a short memory when it comes to NH. It hasn't been the "Live Free or Die" state in a long time. I wouldn't be surprised if NH let us down again.

NH is basically now a bedroom community for Boston. And nobody ever called Massachusetts "libertarian." Every time I hear someone in the media call NH "libertarian" I throw up in my mouth a little. Because every time they interview any "man in the street" there, all I hear is typical undecideds (how the hell can you be undecided the week before an election? What kind of special short bus do you need to ride to be so oblivious?) and Mittler supporters because Obama is such a mess. Have these people ever looked past their dentures? What could they possibly be thinking? It sure ain't liberty or freedom. Maybe they expect Mittler and Froth to supply them with free Depends.

Romney has the Ken doll look stupid people will vote for him for that reason alone, Yes! We do need to hold on to our position by hook or by crook.

24% would be a great result, much more so than the 18% Rasmussen has us at and especially if Romney is knocked down a few points.

it'd be 3-4x as many votes as 2008 if you look at absolute numbers... even better than Iowa.

Let's hope so, as it is his last tiny shot at the nomination. Lose NH and it is OVER!

My hope for NH is 3rd or better for Ron Paul and Santorum getting no better than 5th. Yes, I want to see Santorum tank and put an end to his riding the media wave. He has no business being taken seriously except the media has decided to use him (yes, he's a tool :) of the media). I'm always optimistic we can do better so I'll keep pushing for a first place finish but it's going to be a major challenge with so much of the media working against.

I'm from NH - a native, family has been here for generations. There are a couple problems.. NH is a divided state ( 2 very different worlds) with the southern third being the bedroom community of Boston with a high percentage of Mass transplants now living here - these are people who lived under the Kennedy's for years, compared to them Romney is ultra conservative.. They naturally see him as "their guy"... The northern 2/3 of the state is the old "live free or die" crowd, staunchly independent and distrustful of the govt.. Here is where RP will get a bunch of support. Problem is most of the population is in the bottom 1/3... The MSM is telling everyone that only Romney can beat Obama and people here see that as the most important thing.. Get rid of Obama first and then deal with what we've got.. What they don't get is Romney == Obama..

Santorum, Gingrich and Huntsman are going to get votes from the anybody but Romney crowd and those who don't like RP's FP stance.. I see another 3 way tie in the works... With Romney coming out on top by 5-8%...

I hope I'm wrong..

That's not true, this is just a perception that most of the public believes so it makes it harder but the truth is this is going to be a primary like we've never seen in recent history. Before IA and NH were so important (pre 1970's) it was a different game and right now I think we're seeing a similar issue. One of the main reasons I believe this is because I think we have seen evidence of a serious wall in Romney support, and that makes for an interesting situation.

He could win if he does some completely extraordinary in the last debate and finds a way to really woo the senior vote, otherwise what the polls show will be it, perhaps even a bit worse like Iowa.
