"They can do whatever they want and they can call it whatever they want"

The rest of the clip from the interview is here:

He had this exchange on 20/20 with John Stossel:

JS - Homosexuality. Should gays be allowed to marry?

RP - Sure.

JS - The state says we believe in this...

RP - Sure. They can do whatever they want and they can call it whatever they want; just so they don't expect to impose their relationship on someone else. They can't make me personally accept what they do; gay couples can do whatever they want. I would like to see all governments out of the marriage question. I don't think it is a state function; it is a religious function. There was a time when only churches dealt with marriage and they determined what it was. But 100 years or so ago for health reasons, they claimed the state would protect us if we knew more about our spouses and did health tests and had to get a license to get marriage. I don't agree with that.

Why is this debate so difficult?

As a Christian, Ron Paul is against gay marriage. Christians aren't supposed to force their beliefs on others.

As a Washington DC Federal politician he wishes to leave it to the states.

As a citizen and a human being with a free thinking mind, Ron Paul does not believe that ANY government entity should be involved with marriage, and he believes that gays should be able to get married if they want to.

I've argued against gay marriage, but I support this approach. I don't like the gay marriage activists trying to strongarm the courts and society into approving of their lifestyle, but I'm quite content for individuals and willing people to call their relationships whatever they like.

Get the government out of the marriage business.

I'll say this one more time, if I am forced to vote on the issue..it will be NOT to redefine marriage...it will be to cement in my state constitution what ALREADY IS> TONES

Two out of three ain't bad.

I agree, let's start a "marriage for nobody" campaign.

I will tell you what is going to happen. If gay people are allowed to marry, they will start forcing churches to perform their marriage ceremonies and if they refuse, they will scream discrimination. This will lead to the shutting down of All churches in the USA. If that happens ..all you atheists can wallow in your immoral filth. I'm so sick of this. The USA is dead as we knew it. Absolutely DEAD. The only thing holding this country together by a thin thread is the Christian patriots who still honor the founders and the constitution. You go ahead a break that up...and you can kiss this country goodbye forever. You will regret it. Tones

I spent several hours over an entire weekend at home trying to convince my parents not to vote for Prop 8. They went out sign waving with their church and everything.

That is the only argument they have, is that if given fair and equal opportunity, the gay community will just try to take more and more and try to shut down their church. I mean, they're treating it like a battle in WWI where you are talking about fighting over a hill or a few hundred yards of ground, and if we let them take the hill then it's all over, France will belong to Germany.

The only thing I can say is just try to do what's right. If the gay community does come back and fight for their own special privileges, then fight for what is right. Fight for your religions freedom. But don't fight to have the government discriminate against gay people.

Amen, Tones

My sentiments exactly.

Danno, listen to your folks. You know the world government wants to get rid of religion i meant. How many people on this forum would like to see religion, especially Christianity abolished? This is a tool to further hurt Christians and Christianity. Make no mistake, the gays WILL go to the churches and want to be married in there...the ministers will balk, there WILL be lawsuits and discrimination cases by the aclu and gays. It will kill our churches and religious community. You know that the state wants to be seen as the religion. Tones

Wow what a money sink now you're campaigning against it just cuz some gay people who are probably fractionally less than percent of our population could get married. Why are people such tools. Marriage in the US is a bad legal joke. Don't even lie not a single one of my friends comes from an intact family. Wow, outta three friends and myself all our family's are divorced and remarried. I just went to another wedding of my cousin who's in his 30's and had to go to a different church to get remarried. Danno's Ron Paul quote was excellent.

Only a few want to see religion abolished. The majority would rather the State vanish, IMHO. The STATE already runs your religion via tax exemptions and regulations. (I know for a fact that AZ ministers aren't allowed to promote political causes for fear of losing tax exempt status) Perhaps you ought to take it back from the politicians who stole it from you. Less Statism, more individual freedom to choose and (attempt to) persuade. Make that your new motto. You will be more impressive that way. :D
