Browns commended for civil disobedience

By Margot Sanger-Katz

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul has compared Plainfield tax fugitives Ed and Elaine Brown to Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.

In an interview with Lee Rogers, who runs the website roguegovernment.com, Paul expressed his sympathy for the couple, who have been holed up in their hilltop home for several months, threatening violence if marshals come to arrest them.

The Browns have each been sentenced to 63 months in prison for crimes related to their refusal to pay federal income taxes for nearly 10 years. The Browns contend that there is no law compelling Americans to pay income taxes.

Paul, a Texas congressman who has campaigned on promises to lower taxes and rein in the Federal Reserve, said the Browns' civil disobedience should be commended.

"People who point this out and fight the tax code and fight the monetary code are heroic," he said in a video that's been linked to several pro-Brown websites. "I compare them to people like Gandhi, who was willing to speak out and try to bring about change in a peaceful manner. Martin Luther King fought laws that were unfair and unjust, and he suffered, too."

I'm not either, but Ron Paul says what he thinks. It's one of the reasons we love him, right? :)

I agree with Ron on this.

One thing the state tends to do that we need to make people aware of: when it goes up against someone and the someone resists and their resistance appears to have traction with the general public, the state will make all sorts of accusations to get the general public to turn on the someone.

Expect allegations of child porn/child abuse/animal abuse/guns violations/drug dealing, etc, etc, etc. That the allegations are unproven and often RIDICULOUS doesn't matter - the state uses the MSM to get such allegations out there. The result is the silencing of those who support the resisters - because it is EXTREMELY difficult to openly support someone the state and their mouthpiece MSM outlets have branded a purveyor of kiddie porn, etc.

Remember this EVERY TIME you hear about someone being accused of those kinds of things - ALWAYS think twice and ask yourself if someone with the power of the state might be after the accused.

This Burlington VT station shows their bias more clearly (note the title):

Ron Paul praises convicted tax evaders

Associated Press - June 26, 2007 8:35 AM ET

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire's convicted tax evaders Ed and Elaine Brown have gained a new supporter: presidential hopeful Ron Paul.

In an interview with RogueGovernment.com, the Texas congressman compares the Browns to Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Junior. He says the Browns are suffering like those leaders.

The Browns are holed up in their Plainfield (New Hampshire) home and have threatened violence against federal officials if marshals come to arrest them. They were convicted of an elaborate scheme to hide millions of dollars in income. Their protest has become a rallying cry for anti-tax activists and militia members.

Well, if anything, Ron Paul is commendably anti-government (federal atleast), as anti-government as was Thomas Jefferson.

I agree with Ron on standing up, but noticed he said that Ghandi and MLK did this "peacefully" and "suffered". This is the key. Civil Disobedience, especially concerning taxes to the State, goes all the way back to Henry David Thoreau, when he wouldn't pay a percentage since he disagreed with the government on some issues.

However, Brown is threatening violence, and this is true. The only way I'd compare Brown to MLK or Ghandi is if he did say he's going to peacefully continue his life.

What if Brown went on a fast like Ghandi did? What if he organized marches like MLK did? Wouldn't this resonate with people? Wouldn't this show rationale thought and passion for his cause?

Brown is defending his property.

He is NOT initiating violence.

He is stating that he will DEFEND HIMSELF if violence is initiated against him.

That is appropriate IMO.

I'm not either, but Ron Paul says what he thinks. It's one of the reasons we love him, right? :)

Of course! :)

Unfortunately politicians are often punished for being too truthful. That line in a Few Good Men applies: "You can't handle the truth."

I think you guys are overestimating the grip of the MSM.

We have the Internet, and if we can really get the grass roots going we will have a huge advantage.

I believe Most people don't trust the media, but people are afraid and feel they don't have anything to unify behind; that is the only reason they side with the media.

I think this is really good, because I've seen a lot of people moved and affected by this situation. People are asking their respective presidential candidates how they feel about Ed and Elane Brown. This is a good moment for Paul.

Agreed. Here are the talking points.

Why is it that Ed and Elaine Brown, American Citizens are threatened with Jail over back taxes, when current proposed Immigration Reform Laws will give non-citizens amnesty from paying back taxes?

Ron Paul, like many wise leaders in our nations history, supports civil disobedience in the face of injustice.

Soon, I am sure, Ron Paul will state that he does not advocate violence involved with political protest. Any controversy over this will fade away. We made the drudgereport though, so that helps... I think.

Wow that is gutsy for someone running for office!

Would you expect less? Remember this is the same man who currently has bills in the works to get us out of the UN and the Federal Reserve.

IMO, we should make sure EVERYONE hears about this. Hell, start a tax revolution. If every citizen, or even 10% of us would stand up and say "ENOUGH", there's nothing they could do. Face it, Ron Paul, if elected, will stimulate this kind of behavior from the peasantry. Vive la resistance!

I agree with Dr. Paul 100%. We are under a moral obligation to disobey unjust laws... better yet... to disobey laws that don't exist... or laws that were never properly ratified by the states at constitution convention.

I think this is great. Have any of you had a moment in one of the debates where you cringed because of something Ron Paul said that was just the unvarnished truth?

The man stands where he stands and he is willing to take his lumps. As people see more and more of that, they are going to see someone who is going to do what he says and save this country.

I absolutely love how RP does not weigh political consequences, he just speaks the truth. Giuliani tried to capitalize on it and he got a cheer, but whose supporters are playing that interchange over and over? The MSM said that was Giuliani's "greatest moment" in the campaign, so why is it not being played over and over on Giuliani's Youtube?

Everything Ron Paul does I am just in awe and my respect just grows for him.
