Ron Paul Libertarian 2016?

Thoughts on this idea. It seems unrealistic and we know Ron says he has retired, but there could be a chance.

Hate to say it, but the LP ought to draft Ron Paul. He has name recognition, relevant experience, and proven integrity.

With all of that, the Libertarian Party could do well. As in unprecedented, extraordinarily, magnum opus well.

2016 is just shaping up to be that kind of year. All that is needed is for the party to get the attention it deserves. And Ron Paul could accomplish that like no other.

I am not sure if this is a practical idea, but the thought is interesting enough.

-Could convince delegates to write him in?

-Could some of us become delegates ourselves?

-Anyway we can contact people who could influence Ron to be open to the idea?

And by the way, I am sure the whole party would unite behind him pretty much simultaneously. I think if Ron was the LP nominee we could DEFINITELY reach 5% and even greater.

I'd be all in if Ron wanted to do it. Even if it was mostly an absentee campaign, with a couple of huge rally type events/celebrations.

One of the best ideas I've heard on this forum in the past months. But would he do it?

Let's do this. A lot of people hate Trump and Clinton, Paul is sure to attract a large support base in the general election. I don't feel nearly as impassioned about any other candidate that running right now.

The LP National Convention begins on May 27.. we have to act quick.

Thank you! By the way, yl, you can quote a post in another thread (complete with the attribution and a link back to the original post in its native habitat) by clicking 'reply with quote', cutting or copying everything that pops up, backing out without posting and pasting that into the new thread.

But would he do it?

I think he would. But if he were asked to in advance, he'd likely say no. He would be modest and say he wasn't the right man for the job, he'd say he has had enough, he'd recommend a younger person. But if he were nominated, he'd be honored, and he'd be unlikely to refuse at that point. In short, just as in 1957, if his nation drafted him he would serve to the best of his ability. What's more, I think his surprise would be charming and, to the degree the media showed the video, he would win people over just by being floored by the honor.

As for getting it done, most towns have local Libertarian Party chapters. Find them and crash a meeting. Now that Trump is finishing the job of turning the GOP into a joke, we should join up anyway, right? Talk the thing up. The odds are pretty good that you'll be talking directly to a convention delegate, and almost certain that you'll be talking to someone who knows a convention delegate personally.

Otherwise, we are probably already in contact with some of the delegates. I'm sure more than a few are members here.

Thanks I wasn't aware.

this is quaint but Ron's a big boy... if he wanted to run for POTUS again you'd see it happening.

Hm.

Then again, he might just decide inserting himself in their nominating process would be rude and counterproductive, and it would be more gentlemanly to wait quietly for an invitation, too.

Sounds more like his style to me. How about you?

Oh, and I think humorous trolls deserve a break--as long as they remain humorous. Could just be me, but that's how I feel...

FWIW the oldest potus ever elected was Reagan 69, and ever in office was also Reagan at 77.

Ron is 80

He's not interested in running

He's been asked about running and said it's “not in the cards.”
Kennedy asked him during this interview.

I'm pretty sure Ron can make it another 4 years.

But the average ill health baby boomer that sees their personal dementia horizon of 65 fast approaching is not going to vote for him having watched Reagan's last year in office themselves.

One year off the boom myself with plenty of boomer friends it doesn't even enter the equation for me or them WRT Ron.

If I recall correctly Ron Paul's core support groups were mainly millennials rather then baby boomers.

Anyway, I'm sure most who would likely vote for Paul are concerned with principle over health :)
